Great character and world building for this volume. A filler volume? Yes, kinda. However, it also does well in building the world and supporting characters of Goblin Slayer and adding texture to it all. You start with some hard-up adventurers who were briefly introduced in the first volume. It shows how the adventurer life is less than glamorous.Kumo Kagyu does a great job of deconstructing the fantasy genre. He presents scenarios with very realistic problems. Yes, the world of Goblin Slayer is a fantasy-based one. There are other races, monsters, and creatures. Humans know how to use magic and are granted power from the gods. The gods also exist and are basically playing one giant tabletop board game, using adventurers as chess pieces. Yet through all that, there's an interesting level of realism to these stories and the problems the characters deal with. For example, the early stories sort of deconstructs the idea of lower level heroes grinding through those early levels against low-level monsters. There's nothing easy about it. Those lower level monsters are still deadly and could easily kill you if you are not careful. The Rookie Warrior has to sleep in the stables and bury his equipment in the dirt to try and get some of the stench out. There's a real worry they'd have to turn to serfdom or prostitution if they run out of funds. No RPG typically presents such a scenario for playable characters. There's even a story here presenting the point-of-view from a goblin. You don't really sympathize with them, but it at least shows some method to them. They are vile, cruel, selfish and greedy things. They generally hate each other and only care about themselves. They have a hierachy. They have a chief, scouts, and sentries. They have to do as they are told and follow that hierarchy. All that material is very fascinating.Anyone who calls this story a ripoff of Berserk has no idea what they are talking about. This is a dark fantasy at times, but it is its own beast. Kagyu is a lover of tabletop RPGs, so he took those scenarios and ideas and fleshed out a living, breathing world with rules and stakes that are more realistic.Plus, there's the emotionally stunted Goblin Slayer at the center of it. One of the most intriguing protagonists to come out of the light novel scene in ages. Rather than all these bland generic main characters, you have a unique hero, and you got to love his dedication to his craft. He never lets anyone roll the dice.
A collection of short stories set in the Goblin Slayer universe that, chronologically, take place between volumes 1&2 and 2&3. The stories are enjoyable enough and serve to flesh out the world, highlighting the fact that our favorite adventurers aren't always off smashing skulls in or rescuing damsels, but occasionally have troubles of their own to overcome. There's a little goblin slaying that takes place, but it isn't front and center like the previous volumes. If you're a fan of the series it's definitely worth the read, but if you're just here for goblin bashing, you might be better served looking elsewhere for now.
I don't know what to say since others have already discuss in their reviews about: world building, different perspectives, character interaction and character building. Someone mention consistency errors, which I hope someone can give more details on.From the afterword, the author wanna write short stories of different people doing different things other than goblin slaying. Good for him to doing something a bit different and expanding the world. While world building, character building, and different perspectives were all good points, I found myself skimming through some pages because I wasn't too invested in a few characters or their story. After reading the goblin chapter, the likelihood of a female adventurer getting captured by goblins is 99%. If you don't have your designated Goblin Slayer with you... your fate was already sealed.Gave it a 4, felt like the positives outweigh the negatives but this volume can be easily skipped or be forgettable. Volume 5 suppose to continue where volume 3 left off, would anyone remember the events of volume 4 happened? Note: The timeline of the chapters is between vol1 & 2 or vol 2 & 3. Yeah... I wouldn't blame if someone forgets volume 4.Side-note: Do you guys know that this novel is being adapted to an anime?
This one isn't quite as straightforward as the first and second volume, as it's broken up into multiple short stories. Some of them have some action, while others are more just background character development with characters wandering about town. I don't want to spoil the action sections, but the author uses some interesting perspective choices that worked to keep the stories pretty entertaining. The around-town chapters were pretty light fare by comparison, as you might expect. As others have mentioned there is a part (at least in the kindle version) where a page gets repeated, which is unfortunate; hopefully the folks over at yen press will get around to fixing that.
