Based upon my appreciation of Mr. Hornfischer’s superb Neptune’s Inferno, I pre-ordered this book as soon as I learned it was to be published. My anticipation of another thoughtful and elegant account of our Navy’s role in the defeat of Japan was not disappointed. In the interest of complete disclosure, I will say that I was taken off guard by the book’s title. I had focused on “The Fleet at Flood Tide” and was surprised to find that the book includes much information that does not relate to the to “the Fleet.” The detailed descriptions of what the Marines endured ashore in subduing the Marianas and the high drama of the flight of the Enola Gay provide an eloquent and persuasive coda to what it took to end a hopelessly savage war and avoid the more brutal “peace” that would have been the inevitable result of a longer war.Among the author’s achievements is his compelling case for the use of the atomic bomb. By 1944-45, it was clear that Japan had lost the war; yet, her leaders refused to accept reality, and many Japanese and American lives were needlessly lost. The author explains how conquest of Tinian in the Marianas and the development of the B-29 provided the means to attack the Japanese homeland regularly. The success of the Manhattan Project added a weapon so devastating that the Japanese finally acknowledged the inevitable. Mr. Hornfischer’s account of the way these momentous events played out provides some new details about how they were perceived by the Japanese that are very worthwhile. His account of the how the Japanese literally fought to the last man in the Marianas includes descriptions from the Japanese point of view that are illuminating. But what of the Fleet? The author includes a thorough description of the Battle of the Philippine Sea and its significance in the eventual defeat of Japan. He also includes some informative descriptions of how the fleet supported the landings. Later he provides a cursory treatment of Leyte Gulf and the taking of Iwo Jima and Okinawa – including the impact of the Kamikazes. Yet to be frank, I finished the book thinking that the coverage of these momentous events had been a bit slighted. I believe I understand the author’s intent to focus on the pivotal role played by the conquest of the Marianas, but on balance, I would have preferred a second volume to give these other details more attention. Mr. Hornfischer is such a good writer that a second volume would have been welcome. In a book of this breadth, a few mistakes or omissions are inevitable. I generally agreed with his portrayal of Terrible (Kelly) Turner as an irascible genius, but I think it would be fairer to fault him with oversights in the days before Pearl Harbor while he was still back in Washington rather than to blame him for the debacle at the Battle of Savo Island. In any case, I could not make sense out of his statement on p. 28 that Admiral King exonerated Turner in a letter to CNO Harold Stark. By August 1942, the date of this disaster, Betty Stark had been shunted aside to command our meager naval forces in Europe (COMNAVER), and Admiral King was clearly at the top of the Navy’s totem pole as COMINICH -- Commander in Chief, the senior uniformed officer in the Navy. Accordingly, King would not have written to Stark after Savo Island to exonerate Turner. Something is amiss here. The battleship Tennessee, even her post-Pearl Harbor modernization, had a single catapult on her somewhat narrow fantail – not two (p. 89). MacArthur was driven out of the Philippines in 1942, not 1941 (p. 330). The description of “Ultra radio transcripts” (p. 420) should have been to “Magic,” the name given to our code breaking in the Pacific. “Ultra” refers to the British breaking of the German codes. I don’t recall Nagumo ever having had battleship Nagato as his flagship (p. 492), at least during the critical moments of the War. She was Yamato’s flagship during the raid on Pearl Harbor before Yamato was commissioned. Finally, the exceptionally able gunnery enthusiast, Willis A. Lee, was a Vice Admiral, not a Rear Admiral during the periods covered in the book. If details are important enough to mention his precise rank, then they should be correct. These minor points aside, I liked Mr. Hornfischer’s description of the key commanders. Among other things, I share his admiration for Admiral Spruance and was glad to see him get the credit he is due. The plentiful and useful maps were another strength of the book. Although this was not the book I was expecting from its title, it is a very fine work of history. One of the rewarding things about reading history is to encounter a new and different perspective on events that were already familiar supported by new sources of information. Mr. Hornfischer’s book does precisely that and is very rewarding to either a generalist or a serious student.Opinions about using the atomic bomb, the attack on Pearl Harbor, comfort women, and savagery with prisoners of war will haunt any discussion of the Pacific War forever. Nevertheless, because of the way the war ended and the reconciliation that was possible after it, the United States and Japan are trusted and valued allies to this day. There are no good wars, but some wars have good endings. Mr. Hornfischer makes a persuasive case that the Pacific War was one of them.

When this book first arrived last week, I was somewhat dismayed to learn that, while telling the tale of the final days of the Pacific Theatre in World War II, the three leaders it chose to focus on more deeply in this work were different from the ones I expected. He chose on Raymond Spruance, commander of the Fifth Fleet, Kelly Turner, commander of the transports that landed the amphibious forces ( Marines and Army), and Paul Tibbets, who flew the history-changing first atomic bombing mission. While these seemed disjointed choices at first, they proved to be quite smart. These are major players in the campaigns to capture Saipan and the Marianas, and with his intense examination of the Japanese will to resist, one is left with the obvious conclusion that an invasion of Japan proper would have been bloody beyond measure. Hornfischer does not proselytize, but lays out the facts of this critical period concisely and clearly. He does so with his usual engaging and readable narrative. Like his previous works, Hornfischer does not disappoint in this production that deals with the final throes of the Japanese attempt to rule the Pacific. Once again, I am reminded how grateful we all must be to the warriors of World War II.

The subtitle of this fine narrative history is apt: "America at Total War in the Pacific, 1944-1945." This title was released four days ago and I've already read all 602 pages. Yes, it's military history, and naval history in particular, so you might wonder why a food historian and cookbook author reads it. It is possibly a glimpse into a future that never happened to me. In 1961, my father, a former Navy Lieutenant Commander working for the Department of Defense in ELINT, wanted me to go to the Naval Academy, so my mom, who was a Republican committeewoman, leaned on Rep. Joel T. Broyhill to appoint her son. He appointed me, all right, but to the Air Force Academy. I had already fallen in love with the University of Virginia, so I made a deal with dad. I would enroll in the Navy NROTC program at UVa. I lasted three semesters before realizing that the military was not my calling. However, I was number one in my class in Naval Science. Hence my quick read of this book. This gung-ho account of the end of the War of the Pacific has real characters, occasional dialogue, and a plot with omniscient narration, so it's a tense and emotional read. If you were Paul Tibbets, who piloted the Enola Gay B-29 that dropped the A-Bomb "Little Boy" on Hiroshima, how would you feel about killing 100,000 civilians? President Truman wondered too. "What do you think?" he asked Tibbets. "Mr. President," he replied, "I think I did what I was told." The president slapped his hand on the table. "You're damn right you did, and I'm the guy who sent you. If anybody gives you a hard time about it, refer them to me."Divided into four parts, Sea, Land, Air, and Earth, author James D. Hornfischer focuses on the high points of military and political strategy that sealed the victory for the Allies in the Pacific, sometimes in gritty and gory detail. Meticulously researched but not academic, this book is my favorite read of 2016--so far.

For 2,000 years, Catholicism--the largest religion in the world and in the United States--has shaped global history on a scale unequaled by any other institution. But until now, Catholics interested in their faith have been hard-pressed to find an accessible, affirmative, and exciting history of the Church."Triumph is that history. Inside, you'll discover the spectacular story of the Church from Biblical times and the early days of St. Peter--the first pope--to the twilight years of John Paul II. It is a sweeping drama of Roman legions, great crusades, epic battles, toppled empires, heroic saints, and enduring faith. H. W. Crocker III wrote a good survey of Catholic Church. Croker's book is well written and well organized. Crocker also showed wit and the book is laced with humor which keeps readers' attention. The book is a good introduction to approximately 2000 years of Catholic History and should invite further investigation..The Prologue treated Constantine's military victory over Maxentius at Milvian Bridge in 312 AD. Crocker's description of the battle scene was suprisingly well done. If Crocker is not a military historia, he still did an exceptional job. The victory insured freedom of religious liberty for both Catholics and "Pagans."Crocker's account of Roman control of Judea c. 63 BC provided a historiical background to Jewish background and political history from which early Catholicism emerged. Crocker explained the differences among Jewish groups such as the Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes, etc. Readers should note that St. Paul was at one time a persecuting Pharissee.Crocker then examined the persecution of the Early Church. Persecutions were mostly sporadic, but the reigns of Decius (249-252)and Diocletian (284-305)consisted of attempts to erase the Early Church. When one reads that the Early Church was built on the blood of its martyrs, these persecutions confirm that phrase. The Early Church faced internal problems from the Gnostics, the Arians, and others. The Council of Nicea (325) resolved these differences in favor of St. Athanasius (293-373)who argued in favor of both Christ's human and divine nature (The Nicene Creed and the Apostles'Creed).Challenges to the early Catholic Church did not stop. The Roman civil wars and pressures from "barbarians" occured while St. Jerome (346-420)edited and translated the Vulgate Bible, and St. Augustine (354-430) wrote his classics such as THE CITY OF GOD. The Popes did what they could to maintain Catholcism in spite of barbarian invasions and fickle poltical leaders. The reputation of the Papacy and the early Catholic Church was enhanced when Pope Leo I (440-461)successfully negotiated an agreement with Atilla the Hun (400-453)not to sack Rome which later resulted in Hun defeats and the collapse of the Hun threat. The Catholic Church also benefited from barbarian realms which were created out of the Roman Empire. From c. 500-750,barbarian leaders needed literate people to administer new found kingdoms. Since the only literate men were Catholic clergy, monks, and nuns, these Catholics were valued for their literacy. Clovis (c.480-520) gave the Benedictines land and recognition due to their learning and ability. St. Benedict (480-544)created this order whose monks created the library at Monte Casino. Pope Gregory I (590-604)encouraged learning and is credited for creating Gregorian Chant. Crocker explained that the Catholic authorities were enhanced by Charles Martel's (718-774)victory over supposedly invincible Moslems in 732. His later successor Charlemagne (768-814)was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III (795-816)to benefit of both Charlegmange's Franks and the Catholic Church.Unfortunately, after Charlemagnes'death, the Europeans were invaded by Saracens (Noth African Moslems)Magyars (Hungarians), and especially the Scandanavians. The Papacy suffered creditibility due to simony, bribes, and nepotism. Crocker "did not shy away" from the Church scandals and carefully explained these problems. Secular rulers tried to take control of the Catholic Church, and the scandals gave cause for secular "reform." The installation of Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085)brought reform and what some historians call The Papal Revolution. Gregory's reforms led to conflict with the German ruler Henry IV (1056-1106) which led to excommunication, reconciliation, and war. While Henry's were forced to leave Italy by the Normans, the Normans looted Rome when they were not paid. Gregory did not live long enough to realize his Papal Revolution whereby the Pope and the Curia gradually wrested control of the Catholic ChurchAnother crisis emerged re the Crusades. When Pope Urban (1088-1099)called for the Crusades in 1095, European History changed radically. The initial success of the Crusaders was marred by later political and economic power struggles. In 1204, the Crusaders looted Constantinople in revenge for Byzantine savage attacks on Catholics previously. The Crusades were ultimately a military failure, but they helped Europeans learn from their enemies. The crudading spirit also affected Western Europe. In 1208, French Catholics defeated a much large army of Algigensians who threatened the social order and stability in Europe. The Albigensian threat was based on their fanaticism and casual toleration of murder. To meet the threat of the Albigensians, St. Dominic (1170-1221) started a new order called The Order of Preachers or Dominicans who were a studious order who used reason and effective preaching to combat heresy. Crocker gave credit to St. Dominic,St. Albertus Magnus (1193-1280), and especially St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)who re-emphasized Aristotle's work on logic to make the Catholic Faith reasonable to counter "blind faith," supersitition, and fanaticism. Crocker's coverage of St. Thomas Aquinas & co. was short but surprisingly well done.In spite of the progress of the "High Middle Ages" (c.1050-1350),the Catholic Church had further divisions and almost complete disaster. Crocker wrote a good account of the Catholic Church's Schism (1377-1414)wherby a dispute between Phillip IV (1285-1314)and Pope Boniface VIII (1294-1303) led to rival claims to Papacy, persecution, and finally reconciliation at the Council of Constance (1414-1417). However these conflicts weakened the Church and assited the "Reformation." Beginning with the political support of Luther (1483-1546)and the division of Europe, Europe was convulsed in violent religious hatred, terrible religious wars including the terrible Thirty Years War (1618-1648), and attacks on science. As some historians noted, the Europeans entered a new age of barbarism.Yet, the Catholic Counter Reformation was spectacular. The Catholics regained areas of Poland from the Protestants. New effective Catholic orders were created, and the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, were the most notable. St. Ignatius of Loyala (1491-1556)started the Jesuits, and their fame of learning became well know. As St. Ignatius once wrote,"Virtue unlearned is virtue unarmed." Catholics regained self confidence, and the expansion became permanent.Crocker devoted a section to refute false claims about Catholics denying science. Father Copernicus (1473-1573)developed a heliocentric solar system which Catholic authorities promoted. The false canard that Galleo was jailed and tortured was refuted by Crocker. Galileo was never imprisosned and never tortured. His biggest fault was that he was an ungrateful guest. In 1610, Pope Paul V (1605-1621)had a large reception honoring Galileo. Later in 1624 Pope Urban VIII (1622-1644)who "persecuted" Galileo, honored Galileo with another huge reception. Galileo insulted his hosts and made claims which could not be proven at the time. Galileo was given a house arrest in 1633 which was a moot point since he was legally blind. While under arrest, Galileo resides in luxurious living quarters with his own chef and wine taster. While he was told not to write, he did, and his daughter a devout nun, did his written expression. Some of Galileo's best work re physics was done in his later life.Crocker spent considerable time writing about the convulsions started by the French Revolution. Crocker gave "chapter and verse" details about the convulsions of the French Reign of Terror, wars of the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and the persecution of Catholics plus Catholic martyrs. With the aftermath of French Revolution and the rise of Nationalism, the Papacy lost control of the Papal States. Yet, Catholic influence did not die with the loss of the Papal States. A Catholic started renewal of Thomism and successful response to Modernism enhanced the Catholic Church both socially and intellectually.Catholics were again challenged by the convulsions of the 20th. century. Crocker, among others, refuted the false claims that somehow Pope Pius XII was "Hitler's Pope." Crocker again cited "chapter and verse" with numerous sources as others have done. The Catholic authorities made intelligent responses to crises during and after the Cold War. Crocker summarized recent Catholic History very well.Crocker's book is well written and informative. While this writer disagrees with Crocker's political views, the undersigned cannot deny that Crocker wrote a good book that should be attractive to readers of whatever political persuasion. The book is a good start for those interested in Catholic history.January 11, 2015James E. Egolf

I really enjoyed Crocker's history of the Catholic Church. I am a Protestant joyfully on the brink of crossing the Tiber, and I really liked getting to learn about the history of the ante-Reformation Church. I think this book is detailed and inspiring. With that said I cannot give it five stars because it is not above reproach. As should come as a surprise to no one given the title, the book sometimes ventures more into polemics than the type of unbiased scholarship some readers would expect as a norm. One example can be found in the fact that Crocker accurately informs his reader that the early Calvinists shut down the theatres (among other anti-fun measures like banning Christmas), but in his many complaints here and those he levels against Moliere he somehow neglected to mention that "Moliere" was a pen name, and it was used because the Catholic Church denied actors the sacraments in France at that time period, and has herself had a bit if a rocky relationship with the theatre (and music) over the centuries. One is left to wonder if the author is always inclined to be completely fair in his discussion of other religious groups, or non-conservative ideas in general. I would also note that, for better or worse, he paints a pretty bleak picture of Luther. Furthermore he has a pretty dim view of the American Revolution. With that said he is by no means anti-American and is not above criticism of Catholic and English figures. Additionally I want to point out that the author sort of gives the impression that the Church supports capital punishment...and that's not true. Perhaps I misunderstood Crocker in the book- I'm certainly not calling him a liar, but read the CCC or any modern documents on the subject put our by the bishops and it will be clear that the Catholic Church opposes the use of the death penalty in most if not practically all cases in these modern times regardless of historical pratices. All in all this is a good book, but a book named "the power and glory of the Catholic Church" adorned with an endorsement by Sean Hannity of Fox News on the cover can hardly be expected to be perfectly objective, and in this regard Crocker has truly Triumphed, amid his victories in history and religion.

Absolutely wonderful book. I'm Catholic and a history buff so I thought that this would be a wonderful book to try and understand my faith more. It's a walk through Catholicism without miracles or Jesus. While that sounds paradoxical it's about life after Jesus when the church had to answer questions that were not thought to be asked: Is Jesus man or God? What role does Mary play? What books belong as the foundations of our faith? How do we resolve disputes within theology? How do we stay consistent in our teachings as we spread throughout the world? Etc. I have an appreciation for Catholic hierarchy after this book. Before I read this book I had reservations about the concept of a Pope, but now I under why Jesus appointed Peter as the head. Just as the US articles of confederation failed, and true democracy fails (hence our representative democracy), and a military needs a head the Catholic church needs someone to make final decisions. Additionally I had no clue about Arianism which was as big a schism as Protestantism became and I didn't realize some of the realities of the Inquisition, Crusades, and Protestant Reformation/Revolution. Regardless of your faith I recommend reading this book. It's big, long, and intimidating, but well written and really interesting. Even if you're anti-catholic you should still read this book to learn truths you may not have known.

This is an excellent book about the Roman Catholic Church and how it laid the foundation of Western civilization. I believe that most Americans don't know and many Europeans have forgotten the contributions of the Church. Most history textbooks don't give credit to the Church but denigrate it by portraying it as enemy of progress and science. H.W. Crocker lll sets the record straight using the historical facts.

This is such a great resource that will equip and guide you into exploring the mind of an investor. Whatever your goal is, wether it is to become a venture capitalist or an entrepreneur, I have yet to come across a simple blueprint that breaks it down in one easy to read book like #BreakIntoVC.As an accountant and entrepreneur, I can tell you that this book is excellently executed for anyone interested in evaluating ideas or businesses from an investor's perspective. From reading this book, I gained priceless insights into understanding markets plus killer strategies. If you are an entrepreneur or aspiring venture capitalist, do yourself a favor. Get equipped to thrive as you begin your journey!

While many of the reviews here rightly praise Bradley here for the remarkably lucid roadmap he provides for breaking into the notoriously opaque VC landspace, I think the books greatest asset lies not in answering the question of How, but more importantly, Why?Indeed, nearly every aspect of the How is covered in great detail, by elucidating the structural underpinnings of venture capital down to the nuts and bolts. A novice with zero knowledge of VC terminology can come out of this book with an impressively fluent command of the dynamics needed to navigate the spaces.More impressive, in my opinion, is his explication of the Why;After describing his brief stint in Investment Banking while attending an Ivy League University, the author shares his path that led him into a landscape that he genuinely feels passionate and excited about, a passion that exudes from the page. The sense of community, individual responsibility, and possibility that meet at the intersection of Venture Capital. After searching for a book to teach me the How, I coincidently found a book that taught me to ask a more important question, a question with infinitely more implications then the one I had sought, the question of Why.Well done.

This book is a good introductory text for anyone hopeful in better understanding the investor's perspective, with a tilt towards VC and growth oriented investing. I'm a two year professional, currently in a non-financial services finance role. I've managed my own investments in my personal savings and with analysts coming from backgrounds in PE. This guide follows a practical approach but is straightforward and simple enough for anyone coming from different backgrounds to start thinking the way investors think. To offer some criticism, I would say that it is very introductory. I didn't think that it covered enough of the VC sphere to be more than an introductory piece. I was looking to have a deeper understanding and will be looking for other texts to build on what I was able to pick up in this book. But for a 100 page book and a cheap sticker price, it's a good go-to for a short refresher on topics that are very relevant to approaching VC investing.

I read this book out of pure curiosity and I truly enjoyed it! I work in consulting and I'm always looking into potential exit options for the future. This book was the best introduction to VC I could ask for. In the introduction, Miles says he will "hold your hand" through each chapter and, fortunately, he makes good on that promise. Before reading the book, I was completely unfamiliar with the VC terms mentioned and the distinctions between various stages of investment (including the differences between angel investors and VC's). So, I appreciated that the author clearly defined each term before he went in-depth. And he does go very in-depth on each topic! It seems like he goes through every single detail you could possibly want to know but still, the book has a very easygoing tone that feels like a casual coffee chat.Highly recommend this book for anyone who's curious about what the hell VC is, how it works, and how to become a venture capital staffer. This will definitely spark your interest and motivate you!

This is the best book I have read on learning about venture capital. The information was very clear, direct, and gave me a much better understanding about VC. I enjoyed reading the author's personal stories relating to VC, personal networking, and thinking like an investor. Highly recommend adding this book to your collection.

I met Bradley during his stint at CoinDesk as research analyst. Our conversations always seemed to drift towards venture capital, his venture experiences and the book he was writing. Imagine my surprise after getting an advanced copy! #BreakIntoVC may be the definitive guide for those who are interested in pursuing a career in venture capital. Bradley clearly lays out ways to value early and late stage businesses as well as the most important metrics used to track technology companies. I have already recommended this book to several close friends in Silicon Valley. If you are interested in venture capital or thinking like an investor, you will find yourself immersed in Bradley's new book.

I read this book as someone who runs an accelerator program and helps support folks get their early stage businesses started. What I found particularly useful was the glossary of terms in the back of the book! As an entrepreneur, it is up to you to learn as much as possible. Bradley makes it easier by offering plenty of resources of people that you should be following and learning from. I think this book is beneficial to entrepreneurs who are not going after VC funding. It provides an overview of finances that every entrepreneur or business owner should feel confident in their ability to understand the terminology. This will serve you whether approaching the bank for a loan or a VC. Remember 97% of businesses are bootstrapped. There are other sources of credit out there. The best thing you can do for your business is KNOW YOUR NUMBERS. You don't need VC funding to have a successful business. This book will help prepare you for whatever route you decide is best. Also, I love how responsive and accessible Bradley is to responding to emails and helping folks out!
