In Persia, Omar Khayyam has always been recognized as a highly advanced mystic and spiritual teacher. His rubaiyat have been revered as an inspired Sufi scripture. "The first great Sufi writer was Omar Khayyam," writes Professor Charles F. Horne in the Introduction to the Rubaiyat, which appears in Vol. VIII of "The Sacred Books and Early Literature of the East" series. (Parke, Austin and Lipscomb, London, 1917.) "Unfortunately," he continues, "Omar, by a very large number of Western readers, has come to be regarded as a rather erotic pagan poet, a drunkard interested only in wine and earthly pleasure. This is typical of the confusion that exists on the entire subject of Sufism. The West has insisted on judging Omar from its own viewpoint. But if we are to understand the East at all, we must try to see how its own people look upon its writings. It comes as a surprise to many Westerners when they are told that in Persia itself there is no dispute whatever about Omar's verses and the spiritual depth of their meaning. He is accepted quite simply as a great religious poet.

It is however, a treatise on the neurality that centers the respective journey along the path. An affirmation of one's belief, hope, and aspirations for unity, love and peace. The Rubainat liberates one's faith, affirms connectivity to the world, and validates the necessary work of working together and not allowing our respective 'belief systems' to alter or prevent our relations to each other along the path.Herein lies the spectre of critical thought that doesn't diminish one's belief, but, instead, affirms the notion we all come from one Source. The first time I encountered this book was in the 10th Grade and I have been mesmerized by it ever since. The author gives extraordinary metphors and allows the reader to interpret the poetry how it best fits them. He speaks of most of the joys there is on this wonderful world and takes you to places you have never been before. I would recommend this wonderful book to anyone who loves poetry.

Who has not heard or read these lines of beauty?"Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough, A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse -- and Thou," or "The Moving Finger writes; and having writ, Moves on."?These lines are from the first translation of The Rubaiyat by the English translator and man of letters, Edward FitzGerald (1809 - 1883). While it retains the spirit and philosophy expressed in the original quatrains, FitzGerald's translation was so free in its rendition as to be virtually an original work.Omar Khayyam, poet, astronomer and mathematician was born in Persia in the latter part of the 11th century. His surname, Khayyam, means "tent-maker" although that undoubtedly referred to his father's trade more than to his own because actually, he was independently wealthy. He was a friend of Nizami, the Vizier of Baghdad who founded the great college of Baghdad, where Omar Khayyam was taught. Omar Khayyam lived in seclusion until Malik Shah appointed him Astronomer Royal, who, along with eight other scholars, revised the Muslim calendar. It seems certain that Khayyam was a Sufi mystic and kept his spiritual life hidden from superficial worldly minds."Omar," Paramhansa Yogananda has said, "by a very large number of Western readers, has come to be regarded as a rather erotic pagan poet, a drunkard interested only in wine and earthly pleasure. Their encoded symbolism, when revealed, is deeply mystical and meaningful.One example is the magic lamp of Aladdin. First, the meaning of the name: AL is Arabic for God, "ALLAH." DDIN is a transcription of the word DJINN (or we would say in the West, "Genie.") But in Arabic it means SPIRIT. Thus, ALADDIN means "The Spirit of God." Well, what is the magic lamp, then? The magic lamp is something we all possess in the depths (cave) of the subconscious, the MIND. What would it mean then that the "Spirit of God" rubs the "Mind"? This refers to the practice of meditation. By focussing on an idea, a single thought, our minds are capable of bringing about any reality we dream of. We are the co-creators of our own universe, our own lives. As Pogo, the comic strip character, said: "We have met the enemy, and it is we-uns." We are responsible for our own self-undoing, just as we are responsible for creating our own lives.Secrecy and the practice of hiding deep truths behind a veil of exotic symbolism was the way the Sufis protected themselves against persecution for their unorthodox views. It is similar to the deep mysticism of the Jewish Kabala. The Sufis called their secret language QBL. The alchemists of the West used another example of hidden mysticism. Do you think they were really trying to transmute lead into gold, or were they trying to transmute the gross material of our bodies and souls into the golden glory of the spirit? If you think so, read John Randolph Price?s book published by Hay House, The Alchemist?s Handbook. Nostradamus and Leonardo daVinci also hid their writings in obscure diaries and secret codes.Paramhansa Yogananda accomplished much of the mystic discovery about Omar Khayyam in his book, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Explained. Paramhansa Yogananda was one of the great spiritual beacons of the 20th century. His Autobiography of a Yogi, first published in 1946, has been a best-selling autobiography for the past fifty years. Yogananda was born in India in 1893 and sent to this country in 1920 where he founded the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles, California, a non-sectarian and universal organization. His close friend and editor of the book on the Rubaiyat, J. Donald Walters, also known as Kriyananda, wrote: "Yogananda's charity, compassion, unshakable calmness, loving friendship to all, delightful sense of humor and deep insight into human nature were such as to leave me constantly amazed."

Paramahansa Yogananda came from West Bengal State, India to the US in the early 1950s. He founded an ashram in California, which is vibrant and extant. It is said that the Yogi got his insight into the Rubaiyat while in deep samadhi and this book is an outcome of his talks on the subject. The book quotes a quatrain, then gives the spiritual meaning behind key words in a section called the "Glossary". This is followed by a section on the "Spiritual Interpretation" of the quatrain, which in turn is followed by long sections called the "Practical Application". Many a time in the Spiritual Interpretation, Yogi Yogananda puts in interpretations to the words that just aren't there. The Practical Application usually has little to do with the quatrain or its contents, and is really an exposition of Hindu concepts and beliefs. I was born a Hindu and while this may be fine for me, objectively, starting out from the quatrain, you end up a long ways from it.

Jon Frost is a great story teller sharing anecdotes from his time in airport customs, Intel, and investigations. Having lived in the UK as a kid and traveled extensively there in my work career, this was a really fun read to see what goes on behind the search benches of HMCE. Anyone not familiar with British slang may have to look a few words up, but it's a great read for anyone who's traveled internationally or is interested in what Customs actually does. Frost has a good sense of humor. I read this in two days.

A very interesting book all about the author's lengthy career in HM Customs in a multiplicity of roles. Quite an eye-opener too. Very interesting, recommended!

These are my all time favorite books to read to with my students. Funny but informative biographies that kids can relate too. Great resource to supplement lesson plans. Will keep their attention for sure.

I LOVE THIS SERIES AND AM ATTEMPTING TO BUY ALL OF THEM. THEY HAVE A LOT OF GREAT BACKGROUND INFORMATION.

Got for my 10yr old who loves art. Written to relate on kids level with lots of factual information. He really enjoys it.

Ligotti's arguments can be very depressing at times because he gets into the core of the things we're afraid to think about. Even if you think you'll disagree with his views, as I do, this is still an incredible and mind-boggling read.

Ligotti's anti-humanism is far more profound that the utilitarian influenced anti-natalism it is often naively linked to. Ligotti explores the anti-human and cosmic perspective that has often been expressed in weird fiction, and not just his own, but he may be its most articulate and interesting spokesperson. Ligotti themes around the terror of nihilism and the inability to accept a lesser role in the universe after wrapped in delicious aphorism and almost jet black humor: "Life is a confidence trick we must run on ourselves, hoping we do not catch on to any monkey business that would have us stripped of our defense mechanisms and standing stark naked before the silent, starring void" and "This would be for the good of all, for even those who know nothing about the conspiracy against the human race are among its injured parties.”Now sometimes philosophical precision is lost for tone and character, but Ligotti is one of the more profound thinkers on the ennui of modern nihilism, the silliness of the assumption of an anthro-centric world view, and the relationship between knowledge and depression. Ligotti's scalpel can have a light touch and a compression where he has cut out a key part of the reader's ego without the reader first noticing.This does not mean we should embrace Ligotti's cosmic anti-humanism, but this book shows the seriousness of that vision which is often wrapped in Lovecraftian cults and alien gods. Indeed, the weight of a world that is not built around us must be dealt with by any serious thinker. Philosophers and theorists such as Ray Brassier and Eugene Thacker, regardless of what you think of their work, do illustrate that one should talke Ligotti seriously, even when he is expressing it in pure fiction.

Consciousness is a distortion of existence and creates an experience of tension and struggle. In terms of existence, consciousness is derivative, secondary and actually parasitic. This renders existence itself a burden. We are victimized by Fate, tyrannized by evolution and cursed by genetics. This tortured existence is the root of our tormented human experience.The only defense is not to be fooled by hope or to be made a fool out of by hope. Our best chance at ethics is when we see each other as the fellow prisoners thrown into a world that refuses to reveal itself to us and that will always retain some hidden features just beyond our grasp no matter how much we come to understand. In terms of the overall conspiracy, the only important feature of our existence revealed to us is the permanent inscrutability of our existence in a blank, anonymous and indifferent world. If you have read this far then I am sorry because you cannot unread this review or unlearn these most fundamental principles of human existence unless you prefer to live in state of self-deception (as most people need to do), so you might as well continue and read this book, explore the darkness and learn just how deep the conspiracy against the human race runs but you may not like what you find. Alternatively, it may confirm what you already suspect. On the bright side, at least the human race is not totally bereft and barren, it at least begets, confusion, contradiction and conspiracy. In any case, just understand that writer of this review is one who is in a state of existence without Being.

This bleak but true viewpoint is all there is to so-called "awakening," or "enlightenment." If we exist as humans, we have already lost a terrible lottery, and we are doomed to consciously continue this miserable existence until death. But at least, for some hours, I have felt that someone else truly understands, and it is almost heartwarming to know that I am not insane, or alone, in this wretchedness.

The book may not be the best example of what clear writing ought to look like, but Ligotti does have some awesome one-liners. The thesis, although not new to philosophers of mind, is compelling: forget all that nonsense about how special humans are. We are basically miserable, bipedal dadelions, just more biologically complex.

Ligotti delves into his exploration of pessimistic and nihilistic philosophies without pulling any punches. This is a must read for anybody considering why human life truly sucks and if it really needs to go any further.

About the Author

Deslie Quinby was welcomed into the world of Down syndrome when her son JC was born with Down syndrome in 2004. Since then she has been an advocate and champion for her son and active in the Atlanta Down syndrome community. Deslie has her first Master’s degree from the George Washington University and her second Master’s from the Sloan School of Management at MIT. She is an accomplished businesswoman, having held executive positions at ChoicePoint, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, and The Weather Channel. She has also had experience running her own businesses. She is the mother of two boys. Jeannie Visootsak, MD, FAAP, Associate Professor, is a board-certified Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA. She is also the Medical Director of the Down Syndrome Clinic and Down Syndrome Clinical Trial Unit at Emory University. The Down Syndrome Clinic was established in 2003 to meet the needs of families and children with Down syndrome. Dr. Visootsak also serves on the Professional Advisory Council for the National Down Syndrome Congress and is an Advisory Board Member on the Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta. Michael Johnson is an illustrator and graphic artist living in Atlanta, GA. He is currently an undergraduate student at Georgia State University. He previously studied at the Art Institute of Atlanta in their Game Art and Design program. I purchased this book for my family's collection and I loved it so much I bought another copy for my son's school. This is a great tool if you've got a child fully included in school and you want to address your child's differences to their peers in an accurate and sensitive way. The staff at our school loved it, too!

As a Mommy to an extra chromosome little one, I like the whimsical, poetic approach of how all livings things have chromosomes and the positives we share. It's very handy for siblings or to read in an elementary classroom.

When the kids get a little older and need more information about Down syndrome, this is a great place to start. I read this to a 3rd grade class and then followed up with an email to the parents about what their kids learned. It's a positive message with just enough medical information to satisfy slightly older kids. I like the positive and straight forward message. I also like the book Don't Call me Special which is more broad but also has a good message.

This is much more than an adorable children's book. It provides excellent information for adults as well as for children. This book should be available to new parents of babies with Down's syndrome, to siblings of kids with Down's and should be in school and public libraries. It is fun and easy to read and the graphics are great. It gets 5 stars from me. A grandmother of a terrific kid with Down's syndrome

This is a great book. My 5 year old daughter understands it after some discussion but it's basic enough for young children but also for older. As an elementary teacher I four this book to be great for all ages! I highly recommend it.

Very nice book for a begining explanation of DS for younger children

I love the concept of the book. It was a great way to open up to my children about their baby sister in a very factual and direct way. The character illustrations were not my favorite.

What's fantastic about this book? It focuses on the actual science and not assumptions. It showcases individuals of different race (many books have all white characters, whereas Down Syndrome occurs in similar ratios all over the world. It's easy to understand and had a fun rhyming rhythm throughout. Going to read to my daughter's kindergarten class.
