Marian Potter wrote the classic Little Golden Book The Little Red Caboose, published in 1953. It has never been out of print.Tibor Gergely was born in Hungary in 1900 and emigrated to the US in 1939. This was my favorite book as a child and I wanted to share it with my 10-month-old son. It's a great story for kids and every illustration is unique with many different and interesting aspects. The overall material quality, however; is poor. I don't remember that my childhood book was as poorly-made as this one. The trademark gold foil spine is very thin and was peeling off when it arrived. The almost transparently thin pages protrude outside the cheap cardboard covers and the print on some pages is so offset that it almost looks as if the image was meant to be seen through 3D glasses. It's disappointing that an American treasure like Little Golden Books has become a victim of such low-grade manufacturing.

I was read the 1930 edition as a child (in the early 50's) and that is the edition I thought I was getting. I researched the difference in the 1954 edition as well as the other newer editions. Even though a few words from the 1930 edition may be 'politically incorrect' now and it was black and white, It is still my favorite. But if you are looking for colored graphics and a somewhat changed story I guess this book maybe for you.

I can't give it any more than 3 stars due to the poor quality of the book. I had requested a replacement when the book arrived with the binding peeling a bit and the front and back covers were cut slightly smaller than the pages inside so the pages actually stick out. Plus, with the way the book is bind, the pages were difficult to turn because you're not able to open the book fully. I thought I just happened to have received a manufacturer's defect.The replacement arrived and it was the same, except the binding wasn't peeling. This is one book I should have just purchased as an e-Book since Random House does not seem to want to bother putting much effort into the paper version.

My almost-2-year-old son asks for this over and over. He calls it "aboose". I was excited that he liked it because I remember my mom reading it to me and my younger siblings as a kid. My son always puts his hands up in the air and says "yay!" for the caboose on the second-to-last page; it's very cute. I also love how much detail goes into each illustration. So many new books today have very minimal illustration, but this book has so much, it's easy to point out new and different things each time we go through it. We especially love all the different animals on each page, so he is learning animals and animal sounds as well as a host of other vocabulary words. Glad I bought it! :)

The original edition of The Little Red Caboose was written and illustrated for Golden Books, which at the time was a children's program started by Simon and Schuster, the original copyright holder. Simon and Schuster is the name that appears on the title page, below those of the author, Marian Potter, and artist, Tibor Gergely, on the edition published and printed in 1953. At that time, Western Printing Company was the lithographer and printer, and another partner, Artists and Writers Guild, Inc. was also mentioned on the copyright page. All were in New York, except for Western Printing, which was in Racine, Wisconsin. In later printings we see that Simon and Schuster apparently spun off Golden Books to Western, which had become Western Publishing, still in Racine, while Golden Books remained in New York. The back cover (original edition) has pictures of other books for young people by Simon and Schuster, not the cartoon characters associated with Golden Books.Whew! The reason I mention all of this is because this review is for the first edition of The Little Red Caboose. It's hard to identify these if you do not know what to look for. Western Publishing was not the original copyright holder in 1953.Now for the book itself. Anyone who is familiar with children's books from the 1950s will be familiar with the artwork of Tibor Gergely, who painted worlds behind the story, worlds that young, curious eyes can never get enough of. Every aspect of life you can think of that might be seen from the railroad tracks of the book's subject, a caboose on a freight train, is visible through the course of the story in Gergely's paintings. Cityscapes, country life, school busses, fruit stands, gas stations, boats, circuses and their animals, Native American tribes with tepees, and people on horseback, in cars, on bicycles, hiking, climbing, paddling, flying kites, hay wagons, going to school, fishing, and much more, are all represented on the pages. Many pages are filled with animals instead of people. But the center of attraction in this story is the freight train.The freight trains of the 1940s and early 1950s were quite different from what we see today. They were pulled by giant, steel locomotives puffing clouds of steam and smoke, and the watch-works of rods, pistons, levers, wheels, and counterweights were all visible, all moving in incredible synchrony, seeming alive and friendly at slow speeds and quite terrifying at high speeds. This was the lore of the steam locomotive, which holds the people's attention and imagination at it passes. the freight cars each had their own appeal, too. Colorful and interestingly shaped, their contents dictated their form, pregnant with stories about the industries that depended on them. But the last car on the train was always the little red caboose, and by the time it came along people were turning away, going about their day, or ready to get on across the road. The caboose was sad, because nobody seemed to stay to say hello to it. We all feel that way from time to time; ignored, rejected, lonely and sad, and rare is the child who doesn't know those feelings first-hand.This is the story of what happened one day when the mountain was too great, the locomotive failed, and the little red caboose saved the train until help could come. The help came in the form of two big black locomotives that steamed up from behind and helped push the train over the mountains. That's exactly the way real railroads work: in mountainous regions they [still, even today] have helper locomotives that push the train over the top, then they part ways. The helpers go back to the bottom and wait for the next train. This story looks very much like the railroads of Pennsylvania, whose namesake railroad had massive engines that kept the trains moving briskly over the Allegheny summit at Gallitzin.So, there's a lot of interesting knowledge for young eyes to glean from the pages of this book. The book functions as a subconscious teacher about the world; that's what you get from Tibor Gergely's paintings while the story itself goes by in parallel, but not necessarily dominating the scene. Oh, the climactical moments are there in the paintings, too. You see the astonishment in the faces of the watchers, and somehow you see fear in the train and determination in the little red caboose. Such is the Gergely's magic, bringing inanimate objects to life without the need for faces and anthropomorphizing, but instead with implied action. Never mind that the world of 1953 looked different. It's still a world we recognize, and we relate to everything in it, because the activities and actions are familiar.Thus as we see the caboose hard at work, we instinctively know what it's doing as the story goes:"And he slammed on his brakes.And he held tight to the tracks.And he kept that trainfrom sliding down the mountain."And in the background we see the big engines coming up the mountain to take over from the struggling caboose still holding the train tightly to the rails. The Caboose is now a hero, and the people (and animals) stay and wave when it passes.It was one of my favorites as a child, and when I read it to children who are close enough to see the pictures, they love it, too. The story is over 60 years old, and yet it's as fresh as the day Simon and Schuster decided to create a line of children's books, with guidance from Columbia University, and called it Golden Books.

Another in a long line of "Little Golden Book" series for young children. This was bought as a gift and we hope it provides a good base for young ones who first need pictures to understand the story and a willing parent to read to them, and then later a great tool for them as they too learn to read. Well laid out, easy to read and photos are wonderful. I had this book as a child and loved it, so glad to see that it remains a classic even in today's technology driven world.

When I ordered an embroidered Christmas stocking with a red train on it for my grandson, I knew I had to get this classic golden book to go along. It's a story I remember from my own childhood. I enjoyed reading it to my daughter and can't wait to read it to my grandson. What little boy doesn't love trains?

This book is getting a lot of action around here. It's definitely a favorite. The story is fun to read to them, but the illustrations are even more fun to talk about. I enjoy it as much as my toddler grandchildren.

Many of the illustrations look like they were screen captures off a computer and they are so tiny and blurry that they can't be read. The writing tends to be pretty dry (though it would be tough to make this topic fascinating). At the end of the chapters there are questions and problems that refer to datasets that aren't found in the book. I managed to figure out that there is a website that, if you pay extra, has the datasets on it. There aren't complete sample problems done for all of the concepts, so it's hard sometimes to check your own work. There are references to the PMI/Agile guide, but no indication of how the information in the book connects to the PMP exam. So, it's a decent overview of the discipline, but don't use it to study for the PMP exam!

It is quite difficult to understand why things have to be so difficult. The Kindle edition is incomplete.It promises a trial version of Microsoft Project but they don't tell you where to get it, since the Kindle version, for obvious reason does not come with a physical CD.The exercises of the book must be downloaded from the Cengage site, which is the publisher. Ironically the section where this download should occur Is labeled Brain, but the downloading process is absurd because it sends you to an infinite loop. The only thing that works perfectly is the link where you can buy a companion title that almost as expensive as the main title, plus other stuff. Of course.Unfortunately I cannot control this purchase because it is a required textbook. It sounds that as a Project Manager textbook publisher, Cengage could not get the project of producing the book right nor the web support that services it. I feel this is negligent and abusive.

Perhaps the most coherent and concise textbook I have ever read! Highly recommend it for anyone seeking a sweeping introduction to Project Management. It does a great job preparing you for the PMP as well.The book arrived on time and fits product description.

This is a solid book, I bought it for one of my classes when I was in college several years back. It was for one of those classes I had to take in order to graduate. (I am an Information Systems/Infrastructure Assurance major)... Now, why would I find it helpful, well, I am currently a System Administrator for a bio-technology company and even though I work in the IT department, I interact with project managers, assistants and tons of staff around the premises on a daily basis. The concepts that I learned from this book are just as valuable as my techy-expertise, from teamwork, organization, formulating a plan, managing projects, resourcing and scheduling. This book still has a place in my book shelf because of its content, yes, it maybe common sense for professional managers and people in that field but for someone like me that belongs in a different branch or area of expertise it certainly comes in handy.

I had to get this textbook for my class and as most college students know, textbooks are either a hit or miss and sadly this one is a miss. The organization of the book is poor and it reads like stereo instructions. The cosmetic formatting of this book is poor and I just really wish that another project management book was used for this class. Good Luck!

I have been a student for 3 quarters now and have dumped too much money into books only to find out they were irrelevant the following quarter. Than god for Amazon rentals and the savings at that.

This book must have not spent much time in proof. I've gone through the first two chapters and already come up with about 4 spelling errors, and numerous grammar errors. The writing style is also fairly dry.One saving grace is that they use examples of companies local to the Cincinnati region which keeps me interested as I live less than an hour from Cincinnati.

This is a good way to introduce someone to Christianity and the Episcopal Church. It is also a good reminder of rules for life-long Episcopalians to follow. However, the book contains a major error. It states on page 27 that the Bible contains 66 (39 OId Testamant, 27 New Testament) books for us Episcopalians, more for our Roman Catholic friends. Such a statement ignores the fact that the Episcopal Church recognizes 15 books of the Apocrypha as part of the Bible as well. The King James Bible included the books of the Apocrypha; in fact the Archbishop of Canterbury stated in 1615 that no Bibles were to be published without the Apocrypha, on pain of 1 year's imprisonment (thank goodness that is no longer in effect!) The Bible used in the crowning of the King or Queen of Great Britain must include the books of the Apocrypha. As Bruce Metzger indicates in his book, "An Introduction to the Apocrypha," after the publication of the Revised Standard Version (RSV) in 1952, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church asked that a translation of the Apocrypha be included for the RSV. The National Council of Churches then authorized that the Apocrypha be translated and included in some editions of the RSV, which was completed in 1957. The Lectionary of the 1979 Prayer Book and the Revised Common Lectionary include readings from the Apocrypha. The 1979 Prayer Book includes readings and passages from the Apocrypha in various places, including the services for Morning and Evening Prayer and in the Burial Service. As Robert Dentan said in his book "The Apocrypha, Bridge of the Testaments," no one deliberately buys a book with a missing section. A Bible without an Apocrypha is very much like a book with a missing section. A Bible without an Apocrypha is an incomplete Bible and there is a considerable gap in the story which it tells. Given the fact that Anglicans have always considered these books part of the Bible, and the Episcopal Church has sought to include it in Bibles after it had been left out of many Bibles in the past, the authors clearly erred by failing to mention the status of these books for the Episcopal Church.

This is a great book to explain what being an Episcopalian is. Such a positive explanation. Love it!

Great introductory book for everything geocaching. My son is 11 years old and I felt that this book was basic enough to explain all of the steps in geocaching. He received as a gift and went through the book before he started his actual searches. I recommend this book for children interested in geocaching!

This e-book offers a thorough and comprehensive introduction to geocaching that is full of useful information (such as selecting a GPS receiver, planning your first geocaching trip, and lots of other helpful tips and hints to make sure that you get the most out of your geocaching experience). The writing style steers clear of technical, jargony language and is both engaging and clear, which should be helpful for newcomers to the sport. The book also includes many color photos of different kinds of geocaches, travel bugs, and geocoins. Highly recommended!

Easy to read, interesting introduction to the fun of geocaching. It was full of practical information and useful hints. I also felt the author did a superb job of making this feel do-able even to a novice who hasn't hiked in years.

Very basic info for the beginner. Most info available on godfather.com website but really appreciate the authors obvious enthusiasm for the sport. Reinforced what I picked up from the site.

Presents all the info needed to get started bleaching for the fun of it. I wanted and got info about creating a cache that was easy to understand.

It a nice introductory book on geocaching. It has encouraged me to try the sport. Hidden treasures are always exciting to find. I was hoping for more map and compass information. But that's ok. Now I want to read more on the subject.

I am recently new to geocaching and downloaded this book to learn more. This is a small book, and a quick read. It is a good book, but I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know from the web, and so for the price of the book it probably didn't seem worth it.Having said that the author just seems a lovely person. Its one of those books that is written in such a way its like talking to a friend.

Great introduction to geocaching. Basic but good info for the newbie. Didn't see the list of websites that the book promised was at the end. Maybe that's because I was looking at the e-version.

I'm so grateful to the one and only MRS Marley for letting us in by writing this book. I could not put it down. She had endure some pain and disrespect by some heartless ******! Oh but look who is still standing and where she is standing. Rita - you are an inspiration to me,and it is my hope to meet you face to face one day.

A riveting depiction of "the other side" of Nesta Robert Marley's life by his wife. I read the book in just 2 sittings, though I agree with a reviewer that Mrs. Marley glossed over a lot, most likely to preserve her husband's reputation as the true Legend of Reggae, and which I understand, as the book is about her life with him. I'm a West Indian woman who also started out as a single Mom so I can relate to Rita's courage, determination, and strength to survive and discover herself. I was ~17 when Bob Marley became an international Reggae Icon, and I'm still a fan of his music, as well as his sons, especially Ziggy, Stephen, and Damian (Junior Gong).

I love the Marley family and this book is a page turner. It gives a great insight on the life of a celebrity wife and mom. I definitely have a greater level of respect for Mrs. Marley.

As a young girl growing up in the Caribbean,I've heard all the praise surrounding Bob Marley,became a fan of his music and of his kids music but never knew much about Rita.Reading her story was an emotional rollercoaster as I've seen many of my older female family members line after line.Big up Rita,she's a gem.

Beautiful intimate look at Rita and Bob's life. Much more descriptive than the Marley documentary, which was also well done. I would recommend this book to all that love Bob and his music, or those wanting to know more about him. Rita is an inspiration, such a strong and beautiful spirit.

This is Rita’s story. Is essential reading for her side of the story of life with Bob. Don’t come looking for any Illuminating Bob stories there are none. If you are reading other Marley bios throw this one in the mix, for a perspective.

I have read this book several times and bought a copy for several friends. It is a great read, I love getting to know Rita Marley and I love getting to know more about Bob Marley from her perspective (so many other perspective already published) it was refreshing. I also loved reading a more personal telling of Rastafari in Jamaica.

It lacked depth regarding how Rita really felt about Bob's infidelities that she somehow survived. I was hoping to get that understanding from her book but it wasn't there. I also wanted to know more about Bob's treatment in Germany and what he had to say as he was transitioning but that was missing also. Outside of that I enjoyed the book, the history provided and wish Rita continued success with her journey in this life.

Another great book by Brian Solis. Excellent insight on our technology dependent lives and how to reclaim them.

When the world needs a hero, the hero appears.We tend to imagine heroes as people who have always been stronger than the "evil force" they stand against. In real life this is not true.A real-life hero has been a victim of this evil force at some point. He just chose to not remain the victim, and to defeat the enemy, that threatens the rest of us.Sometimes the enemy is such that you know it when you see it: the recognizable ugly side of reality, that causes immediate harm, and triggers our survival instincts.Other times the enemy is in disguise. It has an enchanting voice of a mythological deadly Siren. It slowly progresses into our "trust-zone" and becomes a habitual part of life. It lures us with illusional happiness, it feeds our hidden desires, it parasites on our natural needs. This is a book everyone should read. The world we live in allows people to create a digital existence that is very different from their authentic self, and the result of this dual personality disorder is that we are less happy, more distracted, and anxious. Technology should work for us, we should not be a slave to it but in order to get to that point the conscious self must devote the whole of our existence to being authentic and true to who we are, not the image we want to propagate through a digital existence.

Tech addiction happens to one of the top items on my list of "things that disturb me most about the world". The world is seems to be overrun by zombies with their blue lit up faces glued to their screens. All these ways to connect. And no one is connecting. No one is present. Such a powerful topic. Such wonderful and useful information.. And I truly respect Brian for tackling such a complicated and poignant issue - especially considering how much tech has been a part of his life. If this is what he's telling us, we better listen up and do our best to spread awareness.
