"It's not far into its pink-tinged pages that you realize this is one of those all-too-rare, no-holds-barred rock bios that willingly offers up a full, honest and unadulterated backstage pass into the life of a band. Through its 200+ glorious, full-color pages, readers are privy to the highs and lows, and the good, the bad and the ugly. Peppered with handwritten lyrics and notes, backstage photos, rock ‘n’ roll cocktail recipes, letters, flyers, posters, artwork and insights into how some of their biggest hits came to be, it offers a wonderful inside view into a band that's seen it all and lived to tell the tale, yet clearly has so much more to give...This Is the Noise that Keeps Me Awake is an essential read for any music fan but, of course, Garbage faithful will find it infinitely rewarding."--Women in Pop (Australia)"The book itself is gorgeous and filled with amazing behind the scenes photos...Any fan of the band will enjoy not only the biography, but the aesthetic pleasures of the book's art and layout. This beautifully designed book is quite the hodgepodge, which seems to be a fitting tribute to a band that also came together in an unusual fashion: a trio of Midwestern studio players, a fish out of water singer from Scotland, and one of the great science experiments of the alt-rock era."--PopMatters"Fans of Garbage (the band, of course) are going to be happy (and not only when it rains, as the song says) with the coffee-table book This is the Noise that Keeps Me Awake written by Garbage with Jason Cohen, and crammed full of color and black & white photos, band interviews and much more."--Baltimore Out Loud"Die-hard fans and alt-rock aficionados, prepare for 208 pages of archived photographs, studio memories, cocktail recipes, and candid tour moments from their 22-year history together, as well as their individually careers, all leading up to the creation of their own label, STUNVOLUME, and the release of their sixth studio album, 2016's Strange Little Birds. Accompanying the members' trips down memory lane are helpful tidbits supplied by music journalist Jason Cohen, making for an especially informative super-long chill studio session."--Nerdist"This sumptuous new coffee table book is a dream come true for fans of the rock band Garbage. It's all here--the wild adventure that is Garbage...Garbage collectors will be bowing down in gratitude to Akashic Books for this frank, in-depth, treasure-filled volume."--Pop Culture Classics"This heavy-duty, 208-page collection of arresting professional photos, candid shots and oral histories featuring all four members proves Garbage is indeed worthy. In fact, the boldly designed pink-and-black book is almost as much fun to read as it is to look at."--Isthmus Magazine"Using a trove of archival photos--many of which have never been seen--and loaded with great anecdotes, this book is a perfect compliment and introduction to one of the most beloved bands of the last 20 years."--The Interrobang"While chronicling the band's meteoric rise to fame, This Is the Noise That Keeps Me Awake also includes cocktail recipes, favorite songs, surprising personal anecdotes, and every gig Garbage ever played. An examination of the drastic changes within the music industry over the past two decades is unexpectedly engaging and offers a nuanced insider's perspective on the turn to digital music consumption."--Fine Books & Collections

About the Author
Described by Pitchfork as "the alternative to everything," Garbage pioneered their wildly inventive fusion of pop, heavy guitars, and hip-hop and industrial textures more than two decades ago. Their 1994 debut album--recorded in Madison, Wisconsin, by Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig--made them one of the most acclaimed, adventurous, and best-selling bands of the nineties, and an international phenomenon: double platinum in the UK, US, and Australia, headlining festivals around the globe. Their six studio albums have collectively sold over fifteen million copies worldwide. In 2012, Garbage declared their independence by founding their own label, STUNVOLUME, allowing the band to chart their own course on their own terms. After a new album, Strange Little Birds, and an extensive tour in 2016, the band continues to define a future celebrating differences. This Is the Noise That Keeps Me Awake is their first book.

Just got mine today, and visually, this book is gorgeous! There are pictures on every page (many new to me, a long time fan!) which you would expect. This book doesn't disappoint in presenting tons of pictures of the band members at different times in their careers. But I really enjoyed the unexpected pictures, like the handwritten label of a demo, ticket stubs from the Version 2.0 tour, and a handwritten page from Butch's journal. The book is big, and bursting with content. This is a band chronology, not a Shirley chronology, and that got my attention. While it's true that most got into and follow Garbage because of Shirley Manson, the book is the story of the band, and there's much there that hasn't been revealed before -- including recipes for for favorite drinks, lists of each band member's favorite songs, and even a complete listing of every Garbage show from start to present! It's easy to see after glancing through this how much Garbage is a band composed of people who need each other to do what they do. There's real integrity on display here, the kind of you have to have to keep a career going long term. With a new tour coming, the future is bright! Here's hoping for a new album soon.
There isn't any band in my lifetime that I've followed as long as I have Garbage. When they disappeared for seven years, it was sad, and it didn't help that the world seemed content to settle with bland pop music and kind of forget about alternative rock. Fortunately, when the band returned, the fans did not forget. After more than 20 years, Garbage has released a book called This Is The Noise That Keeps Me Awake. It probably doesn't contain anything that hard core fans don't already know from years of interviews and articles, but it does pull everything together into a compelling narrative. On paper, I'm not sure that this is a band that even makes sense, but there's no arguing with the critical and popular reaction to the bad over the last two decades.Where the book really shines though is in its account of the decline of the music business, which is very much intertwined with the story of how the band stopped getting along and stopped having fun. I think that too many people put the decline of the business on the transition to digital distribution, and while that's certainly a part of it, the problems are much deeper than that. The band quite correctly describes an unrealistic expectation of hit streams and interference from people who aren't really artists. Absurd spending on studio time, producers and touring certainly didn't help either. One of the best parts for fans is the photos, and it's something you might take for granted until you realize that so much of what they had came well before digital photography was a thing. Shirley Manson has had many looks over the years, from the redheaded goth chick, to the short blonde hair (which she describes as a reaction to her personal loathing and chaos) to the pink bob. I think I realize now that the thing that has always made her attractive is not so much her look (well, to the extent that redheads are kind of my thing), but her confidence is something that comes through every time you see her, and unless you're turned off by that sort of thing, it's an incredibly attractive quality in a person. It's a recurring theme with her, that she's hyperaware of her flaws and issues, but in no way will she be apologetic about who she is.There's a lot more from "the boys" here, too. Butch Vig has had plenty of words in the press over the years, given his A-list producer credits for some of the best albums ever made, but he spends a lot of time talking about he didn't want to be the "Nevermind guy with two other dudes and a hot chick." We also get a lot of insight into the creative dynamic of Manson, Vig, Steve Marker and Duke Erikson. Despite the discomfort of the time leading up to their hiatus, it's amazing how much they seem to really like each other, and the collaboration is intense. We know how the story ends... they get back together at the start of this decade, and they've since created two new albums and re-issued their first. Their fan base is as devoted as ever, they have their own label, and they continue to do things on their own terms. The live comfortably doing what they love. I have a lot of respect for that. There's a wonderful story in the book about when Shirley invites Steve's daughter on stage to sing the chorus with her from "Not Your Kind of People," as she's one of the child vocals on the recorded version.Certainly this book is for fans, but I think that anyone interested in the history of popular music or the continuing evolution of music as a business will enjoy the read. It has a lot of fun anecdotes and sidebars that include drink recipes and a full list of all tour dates ever.
This book is incredible - I hadn't heard anything about it before buying it, but it was a reasonable price and I love Garbage so thought "why not?". The thing is _huge_ - full of amazing stories about the band - and it's beautifully laid out and presented. Definitely worth buying for any Garbage fan.
I’m a lifelong Garbage fan (though I’ve never been to a concert — too shy). But I have all the albums and b-sides. Pretty influential on my development as a person. First heard them in 1996–a golden year for things in my life that I never got sick of.But really, only a Garbage fan is going to want this book. They aren’t terribly controversial or dramatic. They’re three guys from Wisconsin and one girl making music. What’s more surprising is how well they get along. No disappearances, no sleeping with band members, no drug binges (just alcohol). I never knew how isolated Shirley Manson felt in the beginning recordings living in a hotel all by herself. It certainly doesn’t come through on the track. And it traces the development of each album, how they’re all so different from each other, and why.So the question is, should a Garbage fan pick up this book? The answer’s yes. It’s full of beautiful images, including artifacts from the road, and cocktail recipes, stories, interviews, and general history. They say it’s a coffee table book, but I disagree–that diminishes the work. Besides, you shouldn’t keep this on a coffee table where it can get spilled on. Put it on a shelf to be admired.
This book gives great insight to the band as they grew together over the years. It contains interview like narration and rarely, if ever seen before photos of Garbage. A must read for Garbage's biggest fans.
A terrific book for fans of Garbage, covering over 20 years of music from this band... Lots of interesting stories from Butch Vig , Shirley Manson and the other band members... Vivid colors on the pages... The book is larger than I thought it would be.... I was lucky to see Garbage in July 2017 at the Mystic Lake Casino in Minnesota on their current tour with Blondie.... My favorite song is still "Stupid Girl".... Garbage Rocks !!!You will enjoy the stories and photographs in this book....
Great book from an amazing band! The quality of this book is top-notch. LOVE the colors, photos and content! If you are a fan you will not be disappointed!
Excellent book. Has all the stories from the band that only a few know about. The definitive history of Garbage. If you are a fan than this book is a must have!!!!
