Absolutely thrilling book--could not put it down. The novel follows the life of a thirty-year-old female protagonist who does not have it all together, yet. She is, as human and real, as they come. Those who have a bone to pick with her, the Type A perfectionists, did not understand the point of this book at all.Not all of us are happy to follow the set and prescribed "formula for success," as in> go to school> get a degree> get a job> get promoted> get engaged> get married> buy a home> have a baby> save money> retire> die. Some of us do see the forest with all of its trees and some of us do revolt. Shocking, I know. But here's the thing--that's okay. We are all different. Learn how to abstain from judging others.Please.

This was a quick read that I was so happy to stumble upon! It’s funny, thought-provoking, and it vividly captures the main character’s simultaneous contempt for ‘millennial culture’ and idolization of it. After reading The New Me, I want to read the author’s previous novel, too.

Very, very clever.

Misanthropic Millie is the main character in Halle Butlers debut novel, The New Me. If you are a fan of Ottessa Moshfeghs work then you'll likely enjoy this one. I'm sure there will be some readers that wonder what the point of this book is. I, personally, love snarky humor so it was bound to be a win for me.Mille is 30 years old and lives alone in NYC. She separated with her boyfriend of 4 years over a year ago and has yet to be touched since. She works at a temp job she hates with people she loathes. She is a bit socially awkward, slovenly by nature, full of internal rage, and desperate for a change in life. That pretty much sums up the story.I highlighted so many passages in this book. Passages that delighted my cold black heart.Millie at work:"She seems to be showing me how to use a paper clip. She holds it in her hand demonstrating both the right and wrong way. Holy absurdity, little side on top, big side on bottom. I guess I did it wrong. I say "Oh okay, that makes sense.""It's a matter of style," she explains. "I totally get it," I say in low tones, soothing and reassuring, nodding, and to keep the indignant scream from leaving my lips, I imagine that she needs to poop all the time. "Millie at a party:"Sarah list facts about their mutual friend who now lives in LA. He's bored. She's boring. And I feel bored, and then feel annoyed, and I wonder why no one ever wants to talk to me. I'm a great conversationalist, it just takes me a minute to get into it. But once I get into it I really roll. I remember a lot of times I've been downright charming. I also remember a few times I've been abruptly aggressive, sure, but it's unhealthy to dwell on the past."Millie on the family dog, her replacement:"The dog, my replacement, a taut, b*tchy terrier named Cindy, approaches me barking nervously, tail between her legs. I ignore her. This is the only instance in my entire life where someone's sh*tty behavior toward me is actually rooted in jealousy. I feel almost complimented."I really enjoyed this book. It's a quick read that made me smile often and downright laugh the next. Oh, I may have cringed a time or two or a dozen as well.Thank you to Edelweiss & Penguin Publishing Group for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Much to my surprise, because I'm SOOOO much older than Millie, I found this to be a hoot. Butler has put into Millie's mouth so many things many of us have thought (come one, admit it). Yes she is a disaffected millennial, which can be annoying, but she's also got a solid head on her shoulders and a nose for b.s. How many of us have had a boss like Karen or a co-worker like Elodie? I sure have. Millie is, at root, incredibly privileged and you might want to tell her to suck it up and grow up (I did once or twice) but you'll also find her sympathetic and best off all funny. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. Try this one.

Millie is thirty years old and spends her days going to a thankless temp job at a designer furniture showroom, watching episodes of Forensic Files on her laptop, and fantasizing about what her new life would actually look like if she actually pulled herself together. She has a friend who is shallow and doesn’t really listen to her, an ex she thinks about too much, and all sorts of ideas for what her life will be like if the temp job becomes permanent.‘The New Me’ is a perfect satiric send-up of all those little insecurities that have glimmered in the minds of many of us, and its glaring honesty is on every single page, and it’s also pretty funny. While the book is not an actual ‘stream of consciousness,’ it’s written in a way that demonstrates the way that Millie’s thoughts run from one to another, the way that one anxiety leads to another; this is the absolute genius of this short book, and it reads like the mind of a person trying to figure her crap out (and generally not managing to do so). Not everyone will jive will this style of writing though. The situations Millie finds herself in, like standing in the break room at work, or being at a party, and dissecting what’s going on, it’s all written so well, and it’s startling and frustrating and even maddening. There are also times when she’s completely oblivious to what is going on around her and she has high hopes for her future; at one point she’s completely got her head in the clouds and gets it all wrong. The banality of office work and modern life feature prominently and author Halle Butler paints a pretty depressing picture of it, and she does it so well it’s frightening. Fortunately for Millie, to balance out the uncertainty of work and the emptiness of a false friendship with Sarah, she has loving parents (the scenes with them are lovely) and they are very much her anchors. In the past, back in my twenties in between freelance film gigs, I did some temp and call center work of my own; this book very much brought back some miserable memories of that time for me. No wonder Millie does so much drinking. This is such a clever little book, honest if depressing, funny although somewhat cautionary (shred the paper when you’re asked to). Definitely a dark comedy.
