About the Author

In 14 years at Washington University in St. Louis, Coach Teri Clemens won seven NCAA III national volleyball championships. She was named the NCAA III national coach of the year six times and was the USA Volleyball Coach of the Year in 1997. She coached 19 different All-America players, seven national players of the year, and two players chosen as Division III All-Sports Female Athlete of the Year. Teri's players also excelled in the classroom. Five were named to the Academic All-America team and two were chosen as Academic All-America of the Year. Teri, a graduate and Hall-of-Famer of Truman State University has coached in two Olympic Festivals, and speaks on motivation and competition all across America. She and Tom Clemens, both lifelong residents of St. Louis, have been married for 20 years and have adopted six children: Terri Renee, Will, Eliott, Manda, Carly and Gabrielle. Tom Wheatley, a graduate of Bucknell Univeristy and four-time Missouri Sportswriter of the Year, writes for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The first surprise upon receiving this book is the physical size of it. It's about 5 by 5 square inches and about 100 pages with very widely spaced printing. In other words, there is not very much material in this book. I think the average reader could read cover to cover in under 2 hours. The first 10 pages were very exciting to read, with many quotes similar to the subtitle of life is competition. As the pages wear on, the density of quality information decreases very quickly. As you get further into the book, it becomes less how to coach female athletes and turns more into a speech at a senior night banquet talking about how great kassity or monica was to have on the team. She was such a great athlete and never gave up, I loved coaching her and she will be greatly missed. She made the program what it is today. I'm not saying it's not worth reading, but I certainly would not buy it again. What I think is missing on the market, and what I was hoping this book would be, is a set of stories about coachable moments that she encountered in her many years of coaching and how she handled them. That would be something very worthwhile for many coaches to apply to their teams.

This amazing book was purchased for my friend's 13 year old daughter as a gift, particularly because she plays volleyball. It turns out the Coach of the team has the entire team reading it! THEN, I learned that a local school was having a class read it as part of their curriculum. HIGHLY recommend this book for teenage girls reading and inspiration!

This book is fabulous! Well written and easy to follow. I got this book for my 11 yr old daughter, who loves playing volleyball; she enjoyed reading it and took some great lessons from it. I also enjoyed reading it! This is a great read for all ages.

What a great book! As a head high school volleyball coach, head girls track coach, summer traveling fast-pitch softball coach, PE and Health teacher, I get the opportunity to interact with/coach girls of all ages. This book reiterated a lot of what I am doing and it also inspired me and helped me to understand ways to positively influence young athletes. As soon as I was done reading it, I handed it to my 15 yr old daughter, whom I have the opportunity to coach. When she was done reading it she said to me, "Now I understand why you do and say the things you do when coaching. I get it now." A must read for any coach trying to understand and make a difference in the lives of our young generation.

I play volleyball and softball and this book works for all kinds of sports. Somtimes I would wonder why I would play. This book really showed me what my drive in life is and how I need to light the fire. I enjoy competiting now and love all sorts of sports. This book made me think of how women today don't need to be the person putting the food on the table. Everyone is equal now. Women shouldn't be put down as a "tom-boy" in the 2000s. This book all in all showed me how sports have an impact on women today. And how women should become independent and not be scared to fail.

Everyone can benefit from this, but young girls to young ladies will be stronger for reading it. It teaches more than my writing has the power to explain. I bought it for my daughter...thought I'd read a chapter to check it out first and ended up reading it through. It gives great insight to what it takes to be better than readers may have dared to dream...to push past the insecurities.

This is a very small book. I was expecting larger and more pictures. I don't know that it got much attention from my grandaughter. At some point she may sit and read it.

I wish I had this book when I was a young athlete. The author writes clearly and well. She communicates about typical subject manner. But the book's inspiration derives from her tough wisdom and passionate vision for girls in sports and in life. This book could inspire anyone to make more out of their life.

Great little book with clear & vibrant photos of each bird, and if there's a male/female of a different color it shows that down in a little circle. It is categorized by main body color, so it's easy for a kid to look it up from sight. Nice little tidbits about each bird and great info in the back on how to make bird food, treats, feeders, suet, etc. Highly recommend!

We love this book. My 4 year twins love having a bird feeder out our window now they can learn about the birds. It’s easy color coded pages for them to find the bird they are looking for. The pages say red, brown and so on and the top is the same color and it matches the color of the bird. My boys have many bird books and have been using my husbands Michigan bird book. I’m glad I finally found one they can enjoy that are more appropriate for there age

Fredric Jameson is Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature at Duke University. By no means an exhaustive reader of Jameson or of postmodern theory more generally, I found this collection of essays to be a useful, often illuminating, distillation of recent theoretical work on the relationship between art, consumerism, and temporality. The book is a fine supplement, if not sequel, to Jameson's magisterial *Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism*. But the essays presented here also stand on their own as discrete exempla of a properly dialectical, which is to say historically and materially grounded, account of postmodernism.Far from being a free-floating notion of relativistic difference, Jameson argues that postmodernism is a specifically constituted ideology and aesthetic that derives from tendencies in post-World War II U.S. consumer culture. Chapters 1-4 (out of 8) are brilliant analytical unfoldings of this essential argument; included here are the classic, and might I add lucidly written, essays "Postmodernism and Consumer Society" and "Marxism and Postmodernism."Chapters 5-8, representing Jameson's more recent forays into postmodern theory, are less satisfying but remain theoretically relevant. Chapter 5 doesn't really arrive at its object of analysis: the relationship between "end of art" and "end of history" discourses at the end of the Cold War. Chapter 6, on the image-form in contemporary cinema, lacks a certain rigor in approaching filmic texts, and its judgment on conceptions of beauty (whose appeal in today's independent cinema, it seems to me, doesn't necessarily entail the fetishization of individualistic sentimentality) is suspect. Still, and as another reviewer has noted, the ending of Chapter 8, "The Brick and the Balloon," is deeply illuminating with its call for a reconsideration of nostalgia in view of the ungrounding of history by consumer culture.In sum, the collection as a whole offers what I think are essential readings in postmodern theory. These are not always the "easiest" pieces to read, but the very claim to easiness would seem to be one of the things Jameson is striking out against in his critique of consumer society. In any case, I found a majority of these essays to be accessible and well-written, although (and this is a crucial distinction) conceptually difficult. If you're willing to follow Jameson's train of thought, whether you agree, disagree, or otherwise -- that is, if you're willing simply to follow the implicit logic and its attendant textual readings, I suspect you will not mind making your way through the prose.

I picked this one up because I thought it would be a nice relaxing series of short essays for a cross country plane trip. I was a bit disappointed. Its essays are of uneven quality, the first and last two being the best, and in order to get the little nuggets of pithy critical theory goodness out of muddled mass that is the rest of this book one has to do a bit of searching. In fact Cultural Turn was almost completely unmemorable, except for the interesting bit on architecture and spectrality in "Brick and the Balloon" (The last essay) and a few of the remarks on the myth of scarcity in the "Second World City" that are to be found in one of the first two pieces. Jameson's writing in Cultural Turn seemed crippled by a greater than usual density of language and jargon, unlike in Political Unconsious, which make several of these pieces tough on either the casual reader (like myself), or the reader who is not versed in Jameson's ideas or specific field of Marxist aesthetic critique. A good addition to other writings by Jameson and on various subjects, but not a pleasant escape or introduction.

This book is very inspirational for an intermediate to advanced quilter. I do believe a much better job could have been done on instruction and editing of the individual blocks. The print for cutting detail is extremely small, assembly instructions are difficult to follow. Actually, I redrafted all of the blocks I have used so far and found a few mistakes, and I believe incomplete instructions. I would not recommend this book for any but advanced quilters. Some of the photography of blocks is misleading since they are not quilted and the seams show through giving the appearance of more complexity than there actually is.

Anyone curious about quilting in the Japanese style will treasure this collection of quilt blocks. The directions are clear and the presentation of the projects understandable. Some of the blocks require lots of piecing of small parts which was a challenge, but practice does help developing skill. The hardest part may have been searching for the right shades of "subtle" for these blocks. Search, and ye shall find!

Beautiful pictures and patterns. Have completed some of the quilt projects. Instructions well written. Great guide to taupe quilting.

THE DIRECTIONS FOR EACH BLOCK IS VERY TO THE POINT AND EXTREMELY EASY TO FOLLOW. I PERSONALLY HAVE A HARD TIME WITH PATTERNS, BUT THEIR ARE NO WORDS TO GET IN THE WAY! THESE BLOCKS DON'T HAVE TO BE LIMITED TO JAPANESE FABRICS OR ITEMS. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THIS IN THEIR LIBRARY!!

I like it so much making a quilt was my winter project. The author has it going on for sure. Am a quilter for over 20 years and am having a blast with the refreshing newness of the patterns and creative style. Gives me an opportunity to work on my artistic expression in quilting. Excellent book!

Beautifully done

Beautiful blocks for anyone who is a fan of Yoko Saito and her Japanese taupes/Daiwabo/woven fabrics.

A little under half the blocks are common quilt blocks which have been adapted slightly. The other new blocks are heavy into applique. I bought the book for the new quilt blocks and was very pleased with the selection. All the blocks are worked in browns, grays, golds and taupes giving a defferent view point from the usual brightly colored American quilts. The how to instructions were good but nothing out of the ordinary. There were 6 projects that use more applique than piece techniques.

Pros - 1. This book is a very easy read. 2. Lots of very good information that you wouldn't find any place else. 3. The book is always prominently at the different Mammoth sport goods stores so its clearly popular.Comments - 1. I really disagreed with one of her recommendations. But that is completely understandable. 2. There seems to be a little problem in mammoth with food being completely cooked at their restaurants. My wife got food poisoned at one place and my kids weren't feeling real good. The next day I talked with a "local business manager" who said she doesn't recommend restaurants in mammoth for this reason. The bottom line is to make sure your food is completely cooked and if it isn't send it back ! There are just too many fun things to do in mammoth instead of being sick.

Picked this up for an extended Northern California hiking and riding trip. I purchased about four others as well and I used all of them as each has a little something different. Not a single one was useless and none warranted less than 4 stars. I would reccomend doing the same rather than just picking one for your trip.

This "guide" is more like a printout of the Mammoth Lakes yellow pages. Page after page of listings with no added value. You'd be better off planning for your trip with some internet searches than by using this book.

This is a Great Book on the inside scope for the Mammoth Lakes area and it is not just for the tourists either.

I've been a Mammoth enthusiast for a few years and thought I was pretty familiar with the scene, but there is really more to this area than I knew. We're winter sports enthusiasts, but now my husband and I are thinking of doing our summer family reunion up there. My three kids (ages 19 to 26) also ski and do trips to Mammoth on their own as well as with the family. They are all getting this book as a stocking stuffer for X-mas. We travel a lot and I rely on guidebooks all the time. As far as I can tell, this is the only Mammoth book out there. It has a kind of breezy style and is an insider's guide to a town I thought I knew well.

Very well written and concise guidebook on Mammoth Lakes and the surrounding area and region. We enjoyed Ms. Dunn-Bates light sense of humor, which made for easy and understandable reading. My wife and I have been residents of Mammoth Lakes for over 20 years, making the trek to L.A. and back many times, and Ms. Dunn-Bates wrote about stops and sights along 395 that we now must make time for! Good job!

As an avid skier and hiker I have found Mammoth from the Inside to be a goldmine of information. I keep it in my Jeep so I can find those great, really special, out-of-the-way Mammoth places Dunn Bates has discovered.

What a great book! Thanks to the author's casual style and comprehensive knowledge, reading MAMMOTH FROM THE INSIDE is like getting "insider" postcards from a good buddy. A must-have book for outdoor enthusiasts.

Not what I hoped for. I was looked for an nonfiction books about trees - this is more like a compilation of information of different types of trees. Not appropriate for preschool.

Very information but the physical size of it was way smaller than I thought.
