I had initially hoped to find a book of biographies of similar length of the most famous dancers and choreographers from the middle and late 20th century for my 12yo son who is an avid ballet dancer. I came across this instead, and picked it up thinking it "might be okay".My son has loved it. It may not be the most famous names in the dance world, since many of the featured dancers are still young (though quite accomplished), but he has found it thoroughly inspiring. Perhaps because they aren't quite household names yet, their accomplishments seem a bit more human and attainable. The variation in style and personality was quite nice, even for my ballet-snob.The only problem is that, in reading, my son has become better informed about some of the best training programs and summer intensives. He's now plotting to leave me and move into the School of American Ballet! Help!

I was really happy with this book. I bought two (2) copies one for my niece who is learning to dance. Beautifully written and great pictures. Thanks!

I bought this for my daughter who is a dancer. Based on the description, it seemed like a great present for her. However, once she opened it, I realized it was a mistake. Very few photographs and lots of very dry text, laid out in a very uninviting almost old-fashioned textbook-style layout. Too bad I judged this one by its cover!

I found this book in the library for my 9 year old daughter who is in ballet. It's a book of biographies of a variety of successful dancers in the world of dance. It was written with the young, aspiring dancer in mind with many tips & tidbits that would help any dancer in their pursuit to make dance a profession. Each biography begins with a picture of the dancer as a child, fun & interesting facts about their childhood & current life, followed by their dance biography. What I love about this book is how much my daughter can relate to some of these dancers, & what positive role models they are. They are all hard-working individuals with a variety of interests, but what has driven them the most is their love for dance. Although dance is very demanding, they all live very balanced lives by continuing their education in college, enjoying their other hobbies, & even raising their own families. How each one has pursued or stumbled upon their careers is different, & gives a wonderful eye into the many options that dance can provide. I haven't found it dry or boring at all, & neither has my daughter. We like it so much that we are looking to purchase a copy of our own once our library book is due!

I was significantly disappointed to learn a book promoted as true was far from factual. As I was reading it I thought "this is to good to be true" and, alas, it apparently was. It is a great story but I can't help but feel that had the author might better have promoted it as a work of fiction based on some degree of truth. Had he done so, he would have left fewer readers disappointed and would have earned, perhaps, more respect for his significant ability to tell a compelling story. Bram buries his wife only to find the evil Mr. North standing over him in a remote village in the middle of nowhere? Please.

I just finished this book, and throughout, was struck by the unbelievability of the close calls that Modoc saved them from, the 2 perfect little Harelequin-style romances, the fictionally-bad bad guys, the errors in basic Indian geography and Indian culture, the repeated references to sweating elephants (they don't sweat). There were many holes in the storytelling that tell of thinly crafted social situations and heavy melodrama. It was strange that the author discounted the bond that Modoc would have had with his mother. That was never mentioned, it would have been an important factor, but the author wanted to present that Bram was the only being that Modoc could love (this is a bit codependent). There is no way an English speaking white boy traveling on an elephant was going to find his way to Burma by wandering east and asking directions! And why would Bram write Gertie a letter saying goodbye after not writing her once before, and after knowing Sian for just a few days?I did love the relationship between Bram and Modoc, but beings do have to part sometimes, and this author was not going to allow these two to part. I definitely cried several times... I loved the spiritual sections of connecting us to nature and God through animal relationships... though, again, he didn't represent Hindu philosophy really. I appreciated the rich story telling of adventures at sea and in the jungles of India, it is great fun like Treasure Island is fun.I went to the internet to learn more about Bram Gunterstein and his elephant. I was so disappointed to realize that this man never existed. There were no other accounts of his life or any photos... just this book and some helpful reviews.I rated this 3 stars because I adored reading about the behavior of the elephant, her way of comforting, greeting, knowing, communicating... being joyful, mischievous and playful. It felt like the author wanted to justify circus-performing animals using Modoc to prove that elephants love performing and if they retire, that is like death, they will feel useless. That, I do not believe at all! That is anthropomorphising and projecting codependent tendencies of man onto animals that are very happy just being and living in a natural state.ueThis was an enticing read that I didn't want to put down, and I always love reading things that show how special elephants really are, but felt frustrated by the holes, the immature simple dialogue, and the obvious fictional aspect of the stories that had me rushing through the book to get it done.

I think anyone who reads this book will both fall in love (with the story and elephants in general) and feel disappointed after when they find out that it's probably not even loosely tied in to a real tale. Like so many other people I started googling the unfindable "facts" in the story -- and also dug a little deeper into elephant-based stories as well. I have always felt sorry for the captured elephants who eventually go beserk in some circus ring or village square, while assuming their breakdown has come from human cruelty around them. Naturalists remind us of the reality of wild elephants, pointing out how warm and fuzzy their community life is with one another and toward their young -- but making it clear that if the gaping tourists in the Land Rover get too close the dinosaur-sized creature will knock over a vehicle with ease and step on some human body parts as well. Without hesitation. I imagine with the elephants intelligence and family loyalty there are as many personalities and attitudes as there are situations elephants have found themselves in, whether it be a zoo, a circus, a form of daily transportation or a sanctuary. In the end I think the truth of this book is that a Modoc is possible. Haven't we all heard of or read touching stories about close unique relationships between an elephant and a person? Coming to that conclusion made me feel better about the question of whether or not this story of a boy named Bram and his soulmate Modoc really existed. While I read the book they felt real and, fictional or no, they awakened me to a deeper appreciation of elephants.

(Sorry readers, it has come to my attention that this is NOT a true story. It is fiction. I did love reading it but only because I thought it was true. I never would have bought it knowing it was fiction.)If you love animals especially elephants, you must read this book. Not always happy, but honest and real. Amazing story of the love and magical bond between a boy and his elephant. Modoc was exceptional, a very special elephant and you the reader will not want to put the book down.

I'm sorry to say that I am very disappointed with this book. I've read other stories by Ralph Helfer and was hoping this would be as heart warming, but it's honestly more cringey than anything else. It is a fun story at times and can make for an enjoyable read... BUT there is absolutely no way this is a true story. I think Helfer based some aspects of the story on true events, but took a lot of creative liberty with ~70% of the book. It's written like a screenplay and I suspect Helfer was hoping it would become a movie someday, and maybe it could work as a movie, but that doesn't make for great reading. A lot of the writing is just cheesey and literally had me rolling my eyes at times. As a zoologist who actually works with large, exotic and wild animals for a living, I can't take any of this story seriously.

I loved this book! It made me laugh and cry with such a heartwarming story. If you love elephants I would definitely suggest this book, it perfectly depicts their compassionate, loving, loyal nature.I know some people are saying they do not like it because it is not true or Helfer over exaggerates everything, but that is apart of storytelling. Helfer discloses that this is the retelling of a story he heard from Bram, Modoc's owner. Whether you choose to believe it or not, it is a marvelous and captivating story.

A Primer for Forgetting: Getting Past the Past, by Lewis Hyde

Review

"In A Primer for Forgetting, that bold yet gentle intellectual adventurer, Lewis Hyde, harrows the bottomless mysteries of memory and forgetting, trauma and recovery, amnesia and commemoration, reconciliation and forgiveness. If this deep, poignant, soulful, inquisitive, gently tragic and disarmingly erudite book were nine times longer, I would still have felt sad when I realized it was coming to an end." ―Michael Chabon, author of Moonglow and Bookends"Slavery, civil war, genocide―will the consequences of these horrors ever end? Could forgetting be a way to reconciliation? Lewis Hyde distinguishes between kinds of forgetting―one of which may lead to forgiveness and justice. In A Primer for Forgetting, he has given us yet another invaluable work that advances humanity." ―Maxine Hong Kingston, author of The Fifth Book of Peace"The sequence of Lewis Hyde’s brilliant cultural interventions here reaches a new height, but also a new level of intimacy and compassion. The book feels not so much written as 'unforgotten' onto the page, out of our collective desire to rescue the world." ―Jonathan Lethem, author of The Feral Detective and Motherless Brooklyn"Compounding and crystalline, penetrating and multifaceted, these collected musings by Lewis Hyde, one of our country’s greatest public thinkers, on one of both public and private life’s most formidable conundrums: what to remember and what to forget, how why and when to make room for the future by authentically honoring and incorporating the past . . . but then letting go and moving on." ―Lawrence Weschler, author of A Miracle, A Universe: Settling Accounts with Torturers and And How Are You, Doctor Sacks?: A Biographical Memoir of Oliver Sacks"In this unforgettable rumination on the power of forgetting, Lewis Hyde offers us the gift of his most intimate reflections. Weaving vengeance, violence, regret, memory, prejudice, identity, forgiveness and transcendence into one entrancing whole, he points the way toward both outer and inner peace." ―Mark Epstein, author of The Trauma of Everyday Life and Advice Not Given: A Guide to Getting Over Yourself "A Primer for Forgetting is the most original and 'slantingly' (in Emily Dickinson’s sense) profound book I’ve read in ages." ―David Rieff, author of In Praise of Forgetting and The Reproach of Hunger"A Primer for Forgetting is a brilliant, original, and provocative work that free associates like an intelligent and ultimately rational dream.” ―Dale Peterson, author of Jane Goodall: the Woman Who Redefined Man and The Ghosts of Gombe"A Primer for Forgetting is essential reading for a nuanced understanding of how the complex of memory-and-oblivion might work together to create a more nimble world in our political present." ―Ann Hamilton, artist

Excellent story. Very dark in the beginning, but once you get past that it will draw you into these peoples lives, their struggles, and the lives of the horses. They and the horses feel very real. I had a lovely long review written, but the computer lost it, so I will leave this by saying you will not be disappointed.

You don't need to be a horse lover to enjoy this book, it has everything. Set mainly in Kentucky with travels to beautifully described locations, Muted delivers full characters with depth who will become your friends. The plot is superbly developed with unexpected twists that will keep you turning the pages.Highly recommend this book. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to see what else Me Owens has to offer. Enjoy!

Incredible, enlightening, wonderful.I enjoyed this book so much, Leanne transports you with her writing. If you love horses then you will love this book.

I’m an avid reader & lover of all things equine. I’m also a self-proclaimed ‘super-nerd’ with a degree in Molecular Biology—only a few classes away from a Master’s degree. This books combined those loves in an emotional roller-coaster ride! The plot was well-thought out and characters very well-developed.However, I took a star away because the implication that the scientists involved were too weak willed or cowardly to do the right thing. It’s easy to lay the blame—even if it’s just for lack of action—on the hardworking scientists at the heart of pharmaceutical research and development. Although the story does redeem the scientists the very fact that the atrocities continued for so long points to a lack of moral fortitude in so many individuals, not just the main villain.Overall though I really enjoyed this book and stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it—even with a pounding migraine. It’s just that gripping.

I have not read this book and it may well be excellent. However, I am taken a bit aback by the idea that the horses in question are Friesians. This is a breed with a very small gene pool and their numbers are not huge. It seems very unlikely a pharmaceutical company would be using Friesians. Is this supposed to be based on fact? If not, even in fiction, it would seem mustangs, Quarter horses, or Thoroughbreds would be more likely used, unless the company was doing research on the very real genetic defects found in Friesians (which would not necessarily be a bad thing.)

I love horses...horses have been a part of my soul as far back as I can remember. If you’ve never seen a Frisian horse I suggest looking it up on YouTube...their beauty and majesty will take your breath away. I also love happy endings. I would recommend this book to everyone. Courage is all you need in this world to make it a better place. Shine your light on every aspect of your life and the darkness will have to retreat.

It’s rare to read a “horse book” where the author has a firm understanding of both horses and writing! This book was dark and fascinating, and remained gripping until the end. Strongly recommend!!

This book broke my heart into a million little pieces and then slowly glued them back into shape with a longing for Australia mysteriously slipped in. Great horse book that reminded me to take more time to enjoy horses even if I'm "too" busy

King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa, by Adam Hochschild

Amazon.com Review

King Leopold of Belgium, writes historian Adam Hochschild in this grim history, did not much care for his native land or his subjects, all of which he dismissed as "small country, small people." Even so, he searched the globe to find a colony for Belgium, frantic that the scramble of other European powers for overseas dominions in Africa and Asia would leave nothing for himself or his people. When he eventually found a suitable location in what would become the Belgian Congo, later known as Zaire and now simply as Congo, Leopold set about establishing a rule of terror that would culminate in the deaths of 4 to 8 million indigenous people, "a death toll," Hochschild writes, "of Holocaust dimensions." Those who survived went to work mining ore or harvesting rubber, yielding a fortune for the Belgian king, who salted away billions of dollars in hidden bank accounts throughout the world. Hochschild's fine book of historical inquiry, which draws heavily on eyewitness accounts of the colonialists' savagery, brings this little-studied episode in European and African history into new light. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly

Hochschild's superb, engrossing chronicle focuses on one of the great, horrifying and nearly forgotten crimes of the century: greedy Belgian King Leopold II's rape of the Congo, the vast colony he seized as his private fiefdom in 1885. Until 1909, he used his mercenary army to force slaves into mines and rubber plantations, burn villages, mete out sadistic punishments, including dismemberment, and committ mass murder. The hero of Hochschild's highly personal, even gossipy narrative is Liverpool shipping agent Edmund Morel, who, having stumbled on evidence of Leopold's atrocities, became an investigative journalist and launched an international Congo reform movement with support from Mark Twain, Booker T. Washington and Arthur Conan Doyle. Other pivotal figures include Joseph Conrad, whose disgust with Leopold's "civilizing mission" led to Heart of Darkness; and black American journalist George Washington Williams, who wrote the first systematic indictment of Leopold's colonial regime in 1890. Hochschild (The Unquiet Ghost) documents the machinations of Leopold, who won over President Chester A. Arthur and bribed a U.S. senator to derail Congo protest resolutions. He also draws provocative parallels between Leopold's predatory one-man rule and the strongarm tactics of Mobuto Sese Seko, who ruled the successor state of Zaire. But most of all it is a story of the bestiality of one challenged by the heroism of many in an increasingly democratic world. 30 illustrations. Agent: Georges Borchardt. Well this is an impressive book, I'm sure there are numerous really good reviews so I'll add something that might be a new observation, reading about British (and Irish) Counsel Roger Casement it reminded me that I read about him before and I looked up and found the story in Charles Mann book 1493 uncovering the new world Columbus created. It's always a thrill to find like a intellectual Easter egg especially if it's unexpected. One of the strengths of this book was how it introduced us to so many persons that are little noticed by history but had large impacts on the world, they came together to fight against one of the great crimes of the day King Leopold's rape and murderous rule of the Congo, they were rather successful over time although the guilty as is almost always the case in these types of crimes went largely unpunished accept for how they are view in history. Reverend William Sheppard sounds like an amazing man, so too with E. D. Morel, if it wasn't for this book I would know nothing of their stories. The difficulty of conducting this research when the main principals did everything they could to destroy the cover over there deeds, the remoteness of the area and the time period, makes it a miracle that this book could be written at all. Very glad I read it I've created a new shelf called Excellent History books just for books like this although their can't be many such books that reach this depth and understanding, it will always stand out in that shelf as a must read history book.

So I don't usually do leave reviews of books but I had to this time. I bought this books about 8 Pontus ago but I read the last few weeks only and I think it was the perfect timing with what is going on in my life right now as I'm making big choices concerning my future right now. If I didn't read this book right I probably would have missed on what might just be my life goal and something I plan on focusing for a good part of my life once I get more ready for it. I know this is not much of a book review as of now but I just wanted to show how much the story of my people have affected me and how I really want to do something about all the suffering that have been going and keeps on happening now. I myself grew up in Kinshasa, my dad was an army colonel who fought against Mobutu in the 90's and had to flee the country for a few years because of that. This year (2017) I'm about tombe 18 and I surprised that it's only now that I get to know the story of my people and what that so-called King Léopold II have done. Throughout my read I came to decide that one day I want to be a change in my countries history too, a positive change, I want to be the African voice to change the Congo and make it one of the great countries. I know I sound a little too exited now and kind of dreaming but I'm still a kid so I guess it's okay right? One day hopefully once I do start making a change someone finds this "review" and call me out on it.

I bought this book on a whim while on vacation because it was a Kindle Daily Deal, and wound up finishing it in just three days. I have no real background in Africa, Belgium, or colonialism, but Hochschild does a phenomenal job of weaving together a compelling story that brings a forgotten and disgraceful era to life. The story is just incredible. Chronologically, Hochschild does a great job at tying together a complex story over decades and even centuries, beginning with tale of the European discovery of the Congo river and then honing in on Leopold's obsession with colonial expansion and the Congo specifically. He describes the casual brutality of Leopold's regime extremely effectively before skillfully introducing the figures in the movement that rose up to make the world aware of what was happening in Africa. Along the way, the author does a great job of putting the events into historical context and addressing likely counterarguments made be pro-Leopold sources (e.g. why there was outrage about the Congo specifically despite equally brutal colonial regimes elsewhere in Africa, the pre-existence of continental African slavery, etc). Hochschild does a great job of developing characters and presents a mountain of irrefutable evidence to back up his main arguments, all of which is done in an extremely engaging manner. The author's epilogue, written 10 years after the initial publication, is also even handed and insightful. If I have any complaint with the book, it's that the author sometimes makes leaps of judgement in the narrative that aren't necessary, especially when it comes to speculating whether certain characters in the story previously l crossed paths or allowed specific people/events to privately influence their decisions. The story is compelling enough without these speculations. He also (rightfully) demonizes Leopold and other figures in the regime, but spends less time characterizing anti-colonial figures whose backgrounds and personal lives are shady at best. While certain players are demonstrably more despicable than others, I felt that Hochschild could have been a little more even handed in describing the faults of his protagonists at times, if for nothing else than to appear more impartial as a narrator and derail his critics.Overall, the book is outstanding and I would recommend it to anybody looking for a fast paced story, context about the European scramble for Africa, or insight as to how Africa developed through the 20th century.

Perfect! Now I have one for each child. Husband received quite a number of presidential Christmas cards over the years. Those cards have been divided between my two children. I had one copy of this informative gem before finding this. Now the kids each have their own historical reference to those cards.

Wonderful

I have long loved the historical aspect of the White House going back to Mrs. Kennedy's tour of the White House after she redecorated it, so this was another aspect of that history that I enjoyed reading.

This is an excellent book. I ordered two as Christmas presents from two different sources. They both were sealed in plastic. When one was opened as a Christmas present it had an address label affixed inside and a penned name. Very disappointing as I had no indication of this when I ordered it. Embarrassing.

Referring to Wolf of Wall St. Disgusting minus 100 in personal rating. Why does America nominate this trash? Wish I could shout this from the Empire State roof top!!!

I've wanted to check this book out for a long time. The copy I received is in excellent condition and arrived quickly. It was much less expensive than buying the book new. I knew about more recent cares but I learned about the earlier notes and greetings from the President and his family.Ellen Kloth

Very interesting background history and beautiful illustrations to accompany the text. Shows a personal side of our Chief Executives in the White House.

I am doing a program on Christmas at the White House for the Daughters of the American Revolution and this is a good resource for the program. I am focusing on the FDR years in the Season's Greetings from the White House.
