A truly excellent book by an intelligent, researched author. My only small issue is that at times, the writer tries too hard to prove oneself and loses objectivity, and occasionally even alters the story or conversation by directing chat room participants not to discuss illegal activities. That is not reporting the story, that is creating it. Still, the book is informative and educational, and a great overview of the Anonymous subject.

I found this book incredibly informative and interesting. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about Anonymous. The author's "anthropologist" approach was for the most part very good but I felt there were certain extraneous, self-effacing details that the book could've done without which is why I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5.

I've been reading this over the past few weeks when I get a free moment. I enjoyed it a lot. I remember hearing about the various Anonymous activities over the last few years. It was great to get an "embedded journalist" view of what was going on on the inside of the group.

In my view, this is the best book on Anonymous out there. Gabriella Coleman provides an unvarnished view of the Anon movement, from its early genesis and first hacks under Project Chanology to expose the cult of Scientology, through its genesis as a political force during the Arab Spring and so-called Moralfaggotry, to LulzSec and AntiSec.Today, a federal judge sentenced journalist Barrett Brown to 5 years and a fine of $890K JUST FOR LINKING to Anonymous-hacked material from Stratfor Global Intelligence; he didn't actually hack anyone! Jeremy Hammond (sup_g), who did the actual hack, was sentenced to the maximum allowed under his plea agreement and is currently serving a ten-year sentence at a medium-security federal prison in Manchester, Kentucky.Coleman weaves all of this together like a tightly packed thriller, keeping the reader on the edge of his seat. The book's only flaw -- and it's a very minor one -- is that she tends to be somewhat enamored of her subject, and one wonders just how objective she's being in covering some of the movement's activities. But, as an Anonymous fan myself, this is a quibble. At least she has some passion for her subject compared to many of the rather anemic works out there.Coleman really captures the love of lulz, the fun of the movement that drives so many hackers. She really, really gets it.If you have any interest in this movement and in the dozens and dozens of sub-movements it has spawned, READ THIS BOOK. As a writer of techno-thrillers like 404 and the forthcoming dEATH in dAVOS, which cover Anonymous extensively, I am forever in Coleman's debt for her insights and her bravery. Let's hope she doesn't meet the fate of Barrett Brown and so many other journalists who have taken it upon themselves to understand Anonymous and the hacker mind.

I couldn't put the book down. Gabi did a great job outlining the events and stories surrounding anonymous. It made me want learn more about the hacking world, and how can we better protect ourselves. If only we knew how vulnerable we actually are..

A detailed history of the hacker community "Anon" from the perspective of a sociologist. You won't get detailed technical insight into the methods used to get into the target websites and networks, but you will get a good feeling for the very special community that organizes these attacks.

Solid. The language of anthropology I don't quite get but I loved the 'trickster' history that ties centuries together. And I have renewed faith in humanity

I first saw this beautiful book at a Jim Henson exhibit at the Smithsonian, and I really wanted it, but I didn't want to pay $40 for it. I'm so glad I found it here on Amazon for less.Jim Henson: The Works is like having that entire exhibit and then some with you at home.The book goes in chronological order, starting with Henson's childhood, his first TV show, Sam and Friends; his experimental films and other projects; Sesame Street; The Muppet Show; the Muppet Movies; the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth; The Storyteller; Muppet Vision 3D (which I saw in Disney World and loved!); Fraggle Rock, Muppet Babies, and more. It's fully illustrated, informative and gorgeous!If you only get one Jim Henson book, this should be the one.

It's hard to believe Jim Henson has now been gone for over 16 years. Christopher Finch's book stands as a great testament to Henson's amazingly prolific work and his larger-then-life existence. Despite Henson's natural shyness and reticence and quiet manner, the thing that strikes you in the book is how many lives this guy touched. He bestowed livelihoods on literally thousands of people. Their gratitude is expressed in these pages time and again in fervent, emotional recollections. To say Jim Henson inspired devotion only begins to get at what this guy meant to his family, friends and employees.My hat is off to Christopher Finch for this wonderful collection, which is still available here as a beautiful and hardily-constructed first-edition hardback. Mr. Finch gets an extra level of respect for the decision (of which he no doubt had a say) to keep his name off the dustcover front. He's graciously stepped aside to let the lights shine warmly on Jim Henson.

I bought this for my fiance for Christmas. As a life long Muppet fan I really couldn't have gotten anything better. The book is chock full of gorgeous photos, tons of great stories, and I can't think of a better book to get a fan of Jim Henson's legacy. There were several photos that were so touching and full of love that I couldn't stop myself from crying. I can't recommend this enough. Jim Henson was a genius, pure and simple and this book is a glorious representation of his gifts to the world.

I was so happy to get this book. I love that it starts from the beginning with the first crudely made puppets that Jim Henson and his wife made to how they progressed through time. It shows how new characters were developed and expanded. Fantasticly photographed all of the way.

If you are a Jim Henson fan this is the best book out there. My husband loves Jim Henson and recently they had a Jim Henson Muppet exhibit at the museum, we went to see it. This book contains everything the exhibit contains and then some. He was so excited to receive this book as a gift he really loves it!!

Gave to my husband for a birthday present. My child who was about 11 at the time read and memorized it! If you are a Muppets fan this book is a must. Beautiful pictures.

I wish Suffern included an appendix with complete files so that I wouldn't have to go to the internet to look at them. Additionally the coverage of some topics was very in depth, but for others, it seemed like it was barely a paragraph (BRDFs for example). My experience with this book is as a textbook for a class about ray tracing, and I don't think he gives you any kind of math library, but I could be mistaken. I didn't see one. His code and reasoning for the way he does things is easy to understand, except for one thing which bugged me. It's been a while, but I think he overloads the ^ operator when multiplying two vectors.

This is an amazing book. I'm not an expert but I'm using it with two purposes. One of them for theory to understand a few concepts. For example, Chapter 13 is a great theory chapter that talks about BRDF and the rending equation (among other things.) At the same time, my other objective is to use it for a more applied work. It has neat code and the way that he explains everything is perfectly clear.I recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand ray tracing, that wants some theory or both. Also, if you already know, I'm sure you know by now, this is a must to have in your library. It has over 703 pages and over 30 chapters.Finally, I have to say that the further readings points to great places to get more in depth. I want to clarify here something. This is not a book that has a little bit of everything. It's a very complete book, but in some chapters (e.g) , when more theory is needed, then further reading works great!.A must.Francisco

This is THE book for someone interested in writing a ray tracer. What I love about the book is how the author also mixes in some great resources to learn more about a particular topic, all relevant to computer graphics. This is one of my favorite books ever, wonderfully written. Well done.

I bought this book a few years ago. I also have the first edition of the PBRT book. They are both excellent and I recommend both. Personally, I prefer this book because it is easier for me to understand. I think this book is more code oriented vs PBRT being more math oriented. Buy both, but if you're more of a programmer than mathematician get this one first. If you're already beyond the basics, I think PBRT would be more appropriate for you.

This book covers most parts of ray tracing. Rarely unnecessary theories and math. Problem of this book is the intersection testing is based on geometries, not mesh; So it is impossible to implement it on complex model by just finishing this book. But the pseudo code is clear enough for generating an implementation.

This book is great. It has a lot of illustrations to help show you what your vector graphics should look like. I bought this for a class, and I plan on using it later on to refresh myself on various concepts.

Since Amazon has an excerpt of my review, here's the whole thing, from "The Ray Tracing News".I recall when I was a kid in sixth grade I got my hands on some book that was essentially presenting all grade-school and high-school mathematics in just one text. I read through the first parts, feeling quite smart that I knew all this stuff already. I hit a little more algebra than I was used to, but was able to slog on. Then I hit logarithms and was stopped dead - what's this bizarre concept? The text whipped through it so quickly that I couldn't get my head around it, and so the book lost me entirely. Many books for courses are just that, texts for the classroom. They cover each topic just enough to get the point across to most students, and assume a teacher is around to fill in the gaps and help along any other students who didn't quite understand the book. A reasonable assumption, certainly, but of necessity it means the text will skim over areas in order to cover every major topic in a field and so appear "complete".The book "Ray Tracing from the Ground Up", by Kevin Suffern, published by A.K. Peters, will be available at SIGGRAPH 2007. I've skimmed through most of the chapters (not as a paid editor, but rather just to comment), so can offer up an initial impression. This book has a perfect title for it. Theory and code snippets are blended to show how to make a classical or stochastic ray tracer from scratch. It assumes the reader has just about no knowledge of graphics and at most some understanding of calculus. Each chapter tackles some topic: perspective, reflection, intersection, etc. The text has many excellent figures and illustrative renderings, along with C++ code snippets that are explained when presented (vs. the often slap-dash nature of many code-laden books that present long, weakly commented listings that fill half the book). The book will come with a CD that includes a basic ray tracer, as well as code for generating various scenes (there's no scripting language front-end for the ray tracer).Overall, the book is somewhat "old school". With the exception of a few newer topics, e.g. ambient occlusion, most of the material presented dates back to the 80's and early 90's. But this is as it should be for a text of this sort: fundamentals are established and built upon, with the author doing his best to make sure the reader truly understands what is going on each step of the way, (hopefully) without the need of a teacher to fill in the gaps. Through examples and extensive illustrations the author attempts to build not only a basic understanding but present mental models and give some intuition as to what various equations and algorithms represent. For example, I've never seen a clearer explanation of the ray/box (slabs) intersection method - it's done as it deserves to be done, walking through the various types of hits and misses and showing (through excellent colored figures and ray-traced test images) how the algorithm actually works. This is not a text for researchers or advanced students, but truly for the novice, the hobbyist, the enthusiastic amateur.The style is informal and approachable, with the author normally speaking in the first person singular or plural, e.g. "I'll use the same representation for the BRDFs", "We need an expression for the primary rays". He assumes you're going to make a ray tracer, and he leads you through what you need to know and gets you coding it up. He points out variations and elaborations along the way. This approach is perfectly in the spirit of writing your own ray tracer, in which you normally have the drive of adding "just one more feature" that keeps you up until 5 AM. He even points out common pitfalls and ways to debug various features.The book is not without its limitations. The coverage of some topics sometimes ends a little too quickly for my tastes. For example, the basics of efficiency grid creation and traversal are presented, but simple efficiency improvements such as mailboxing are not mentioned. Admittedly, mailboxing is not useful for multiprocessor systems, but I think it's worth mentioning as a handy idea in general.As a test, I chose two terms, "radiance" and "Fresnel", and searched through the book to see how these are treated. The book does well with radiance, as it does a reasonable job defining the various types of radiometric units and draws the important connection between radiance and a sample ray. For Fresnel it mostly focuses on the Fresnel equation's effect on reflectance vs. transmittance as a function of angle. This is fairly important for a ray tracer, though the text rightly points out that it's often less noticeable than you might think. Where I find it important is for things like the surface of a pool or pond, where the effect of reflectance is low looking directly into the bottom while it increases as you look more towards the horizon.The book presents the technique of making the specular color match the diffuse color to give a metallic look, vs. using a white specular color for plastics. It would have been nice to note that the Fresnel equation also is important in how metal and plastic differ in appearance. The Fresnel reflection effect, where at grazing angles all surfaces approach becoming perfectly reflective, is briefly mentioned indirectly when shading models are discussed. The book is interesting in that it does a thorough job of reconciling the Phong shading model, which is not energy-conserving, by reformulating it properly as a BRDF. However, Phong is as complex a shading model as is presented in the book. And this makes perfect sense within the context of what the author is trying to do: the "80% of the way, good enough for a start" Phong shading model is presented and put into the proper theoretical context. The author gives brief explanations and a number of references to more elaborate shading models. The focus of the book is to get the reader to the 80% level in a wide range of areas, with pointers where to go for more information if an area is of particular interest.I could easily imagine this textbook being the basis for a basic or mid-level undergraduate computer graphics course. Such a course would necessarily ignore GPUs entirely, but the advantage would be in teaching first principles (light transport, BRDFs, sampling theory) and focusing on the scientific and mathematical concepts used in rendering as a whole. There are any number of areas that are not addressed by the book, such as tone mapping or BSP tree formation or procedural bump mapping. However, the basics are all there, and each teacher can elaborate on their own areas of interest. Those basics are carefully covered, with the proper theory and equations being presented without any dumbing down of the material. Questions and exercises are provided at the end of every chapter. The informative illustrations alone make the book worth purchasing by anyone planning on teaching or understanding more about the essentials of ray tracing.

I wasn't sure what to expect at first from this book, after all we probably all watched the news on that fateful day.It didn't come out quite as I expected, and I found it to be a much more personal and inward looking view of the life of this modest and extremely professional pilot, almost spiritual in some ways. It goes into some depth about his personal family life, sometime so much that you feel almost embarrassed to be reading such person thoughts and details.There is a huge overriding theme of professionalism, love of flying and respect of the flying gods who decide ultimately who survives and who does not. I feel humbled by his modesty and openness and sometimes feared for the safety of his marriage given the amount of time spent away, but ultimately the amazing bond between Sully and his wife and children shone through, even in the toughest times which were actually after the accident. What I never expected from this book is that it really made me look inwards at my own relationship with own my wife and children and examine my own professional and private life, to see where I could be a better person.Sully himself said that he doesn't consider himself to be a hero, and I have to say I agree, with the greatest of respect. He was thrown into a situation not of his own choosing, with no alternative, and no option to choose to do nothing. He had no choice but to bring all of his years of training and experience to bear to try and save his own skin and those he was responsible for that day. It is an automatic reaction and I am sure that any pilot would have tried just as hard. Not all would have made the right decision as to where to go, picked the right speeds or flap settings or even remained in control, which could have changed the outcome completely, but all would have been just as much a hero for trying. Sully is a consummate professional in his business, and I doff my cap to his abilities.This is no self-indulgent book solely about Sully, in fact it is often self-deprecating as he reflects on his own weaknesses and limitations. He goes to great length to re-iterate that it was a team effort, so the rest of the members of the crew are not forgotten, and the support of his wife both before and after clearly contribute greatly to the making of the man.If you read this you cannot fail to be moved and humbled and to think, "I want Sully on my next flight".

I ordered this for a b-day present for a friend of mine. Her b-day? June 29. She hadn't started listening to it until three days ago. She called and said she was having trouble with the audio. I took it to be that she was not doing something correctly on her playback system. Her observation was painfully apparent. 1) There is no Table of Contents or any other piece of information about this book/disk. It would be helpful if there would be a point of reference. 2) The actual words "Chapter Five" didn't show up until half way through the second disk. No other chapters were identified as they were read. There were stories being told that were never completed--cut off at the end of the disk and never picked up on the following track or disk. 3) The tracks would never play in order unless you were right there with a mouse to highlight the next chapter and click on it before another starts, i.e., track 3 would be followed by track 18. I realize that it is past time for refunds. I'm not even sure if giving something like this to a charity has any merit or not. It would only serve to frustrate another recipient. The best place is down the garbage chute. I could actually think of other ways I could throw away the price of an audio book. And I 'can't rate the subject matter of which the book is supposed to capture. I couldn't get enough tracks in order so as to tell a coherent story.

I downloaded this because I was supposed to go see the movie for work to understand Sully's approach to leadership and didn't. I wanted to at least be able to convince my boss that I knew what was going on, so I dug in.Sully, in his own words, walks you through the first time he relished he wanted to fly airplanes to the time after his heroic landing in the Hudson. I haven't seen the movie, but I don't know that I want to after reading this. Hollywood uses so much glamour in events like this and I'm afraid it would take away from Sully's authenticity, which is what actually makes this book.He revisits the event we've all heard about in the need on and off throughout the book, drawing comparisons from the training he had as a fighter pilot and the values he was raised with as a child. It easily could have read like a disjointed mess, but I really appreciated the way the book intertwined it all.I'd consider this a book that tells us much more than a story about birds flying into the engine of a commercial flight and more a story of who Sully I really is as a person that just happened to also be a heck of a pilot.

This biography of a singular event in the United States consciousness doesn't just tell of the event on that fateful day. Much more importantly, it delves into a lifetime of details that all contributed to the successful outcome. Sully doesn't mince words when it comes to sharing things that should have been set up differently by his employer. When they put materially deficient products into the cockpit, Sully tells us what the cost in convenience, confusion and time wasted as a result was. He tells of the many doubts he experienced after the safe landing. He tells about how his experience in landing safely catalyzed people around him, people who he never met, people who found new hope in an amazingly successful result when the most likely outcome should have been disastrous. The only thing that seemed 'off' was the sheer volume of content that seemed unrelated to the story and the outcome. This book is well worth the time to read. Inspirational would be the one word descriptor.
