#24,949 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I wasn't sure what to expect at first from this book, after all we probably all watched the news on that fateful day.It didn't come out quite as I expected, and I found it to be a much more personal and inward looking view of the life of this modest and extremely professional pilot, almost spiritual in some ways. It goes into some depth about his personal family life, sometime so much that you feel almost embarrassed to be reading such person thoughts and details. There is a huge overriding theme of professionalism, love of flying and respect of the flying gods who decide ultimately who survives and who does not. I feel humbled by his modesty and openness and sometimes feared for the safety of his marriage given the amount of time spent away, but ultimately the amazing bond between Sully and his wife and children shone through, even in the toughest times which were actually after the accident. What I never expected from this book is that it really made me look inwards at my own relationship with own my wife and children and examine my own professional and private life, to see where I could be a better person.Sully himself said that he doesn't consider himself to be a hero, and I have to say I agree, with the greatest of respect. He was thrown into a situation not of his own choosing, with no alternative, and no option to choose to do nothing. He had no choice but to bring all of his years of training and experience to bear to try and save his own skin and those he was responsible for that day. It is an automatic reaction and I am sure that any pilot would have tried just as hard. Not all would have made the right decision as to where to go, picked the right speeds or flap settings or even remained in control, which could have changed the outcome completely, but all would have been just as much a hero for trying. Sully is a consummate professional in his business, and I doff my cap to his abilities. This is no self-indulgent book solely about Sully, in fact it is often self-deprecating as he reflects on his own weaknesses and limitations. He goes to great length to re-iterate that it was a team effort, so the rest of the members of the crew are not forgotten, and the support of his wife both before and after clearly contribute greatly to the making of the man.If you read this you cannot fail to be moved and humbled and to think, "I want Sully on my next flight".

I ordered this for a b-day present for a friend of mine. Her b-day? June 29. She hadn't started listening to it until three days ago. She called and said she was having trouble with the audio. I took it to be that she was not doing something correctly on her playback system. Her observation was painfully apparent. 1) There is no Table of Contents or any other piece of information about this book/disk. It would be helpful if there would be a point of reference. 2) The actual words "Chapter Five" didn't show up until half way through the second disk. No other chapters were identified as they were read. There were stories being told that were never completed--cut off at the end of the disk and never picked up on the following track or disk. 3) The tracks would never play in order unless you were right there with a mouse to highlight the next chapter and click on it before another starts, i.e., track 3 would be followed by track 18. I realize that it is past time for refunds. I'm not even sure if giving something like this to a charity has any merit or not. It would only serve to frustrate another recipient. The best place is down the garbage chute. I could actually think of other ways I could throw away the price of an audio book. And I 'can't rate the subject matter of which the book is supposed to capture. I couldn't get enough tracks in order so as to tell a coherent story.

I downloaded this because I was supposed to go see the movie for work to understand Sully's approach to leadership and didn't. I wanted to at least be able to convince my boss that I knew what was going on, so I dug in.Sully, in his own words, walks you through the first time he relished he wanted to fly airplanes to the time after his heroic landing in the Hudson. I haven't seen the movie, but I don't know that I want to after reading this. Hollywood uses so much glamour in events like this and I'm afraid it would take away from Sully's authenticity, which is what actually makes this book.He revisits the event we've all heard about in the need on and off throughout the book, drawing comparisons from the training he had as a fighter pilot and the values he was raised with as a child. It easily could have read like a disjointed mess, but I really appreciated the way the book intertwined it all.I'd consider this a book that tells us much more than a story about birds flying into the engine of a commercial flight and more a story of who Sully I really is as a person that just happened to also be a heck of a pilot.

This biography of a singular event in the United States consciousness doesn't just tell of the event on that fateful day. Much more importantly, it delves into a lifetime of details that all contributed to the successful outcome. Sully doesn't mince words when it comes to sharing things that should have been set up differently by his employer. When they put materially deficient products into the cockpit, Sully tells us what the cost in convenience, confusion and time wasted as a result was. He tells of the many doubts he experienced after the safe landing. He tells about how his experience in landing safely catalyzed people around him, people who he never met, people who found new hope in an amazingly successful result when the most likely outcome should have been disastrous. The only thing that seemed 'off' was the sheer volume of content that seemed unrelated to the story and the outcome. This book is well worth the time to read. Inspirational would be the one word descriptor.

Public Art: Thinking Museums Differently

Review

In this wide-ranging study, Hilde Hein looks to the history of public art in order to propose a more dynamic future for the museum. She reveals the ways in which public art's emphasis on experience, process, and the ephemeral provides a deeper understanding of the changes―if not the paradigm shift―already underway in museums. (Chon A. Noriega, Professor, UCLA Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media)Hein's exploration of the museum world emphasizes experience and qualifies art as a process, not a thing, hence her concept of the museum as a performance in which objects and people participate. Six chapters discuss The Experiential Museum, Private, Nonprivate, and the Public, History and Meaning of Public Art, Innovation in Public Art, Old Museums and a New Paradigm, and Why a New Paradigm. Although her exposition is soundly based in philosophical arguments, Hein illuminates the discourse with examples like Christo's Gates project and the Baltimore Museum of Visionary Art. The reader finds discussions of contemporary developments like virtual visitors, the uses of electronic technology to extend the accessibility of collections beyondfixed walls. Motivated citizens can freely rearrange their downloaded treasure to create 'collections' of their own design. Nor does Hein (emer., College of the Holy Cross) neglect the significance of the museum site in its effect on the response to collections. Her writing is frequently poetic, as when she explains that objects can inspire the museal gaze which ignites the sense of presence. By emphasizing the impermanence of objects, she helps the reader focus on qualities of museums rarely consider (CHOICE)This eloquent book proposes a new paradigm for the museum, based on a deeply informed understanding of public art and museum practice. By comparing the museum to contemporary public art, Hilde Hein shows how the dynamic experimentalism of the latter can replace the static notion of museums as containers for timeless art. That is an invaluable lesson. (Hafpór Yngvason, Director, Reykjavik Art Museum)Hein's exploration of the museum world emphasizes experience and qualifies art as "a process, not a thing," hence her concept of "the museum as a performance in which objects and people participate." #245,013 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The author begins by saying (Page 1): "This book is the story of a dreamy, starry-eyed boy brought up in the shadows of New Orleans. . . . I wrote 'My New Orleans' in the same spirit in which I launched my restaurants; it's a book dedicated to roots and rituals, to the way I cook." He discusses how he cooks on pages 9-11. Then a brief discussion of how he makes roux (different from how I do it)and other building block ingredients, such as chicken stock, creole spices, aioli, and so on.But the heart of any cookbook is its recipes. I have not done much New Orleans cooking, so I find this book of considerable interest. A colleague of mine is from Louisiana, and he makes some neat crawfish dishes. And this cookbook has a number of recipes featuring this critter. Here's one that I am intrigued by: Crawfish etouffe. Ingredients: canola oil, flour, onion, celery, red bell pepper, garlic, thyme, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, tomato, shellfish stock, butter, crawfish, green onions, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, salt, pepper, and Louisiana white rice. Once ingredients are assembled and prepared, the actual cooking process is pretty straightforward, beginning with a roux and proceeding therefrom.I enjoy red beans and rice. And the book provides a recipe. 13 ingredients! Some of the food isn't so healthy (rendered bacon fat, for example), but this sounds like the end result would be quite tasty!I have enjoyed jambalaya before. And here is a recipe for shrimp, chicken, and Andouille jambalaya. Other recipes that caught my fancy: shrimp creole, rare seared tuna with crushed figs, seafood gumbo, and shrimp remoulade. Many others, too!At any rate, this is a nice cookbook of recipes associated with New Orleans. If you are interested in this style cuisine, this would be a good addition to your kitchen library.

Wonderful cookbook. Besh writes in a conversational style, which is very enjoyable. However, it also has some drawbacks. If you do not read some of the early core recipes, which include some helpful hints and techniques, you may find some of the later recipes mysterious. For example, in his recipe for roux (FIRST RECIPE) he tells the reader that roux is so ubiquitous for this style that the recipes do not include "make a roux" as a step. Later you will run into recipes with fat, flour and trinity as ingredients. The instructions have you combining same. But if you were not aware of it, you might not realize you are making a roux. I consider myself a fairly accomplished amateur, but I learned some great techniques from Besh. Specifically, Besh's technique for making a dark roux saves a half an hour off the regular amount of time it used to take me. And, the resulting roux has a better flavor than my old painstaking traditional technique. Overall, I believe that this a worthwhile cookbook to buy. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is that you have to read it like a book in order to accomplish the recipes (the recipes are not necessarily complete in their own right).

My cookbook collection is now easily swelling towards and maybe even above 400 now. Out of all of them it is fun every now and then to reflect on say, the Top 25. This new offering from Besh makes that list, possibly even climbing into the coveted Top 10. Requirements, you ask? Must be unique, well thought out, with specific viewpoint of cooking expressed and followed through, good layout, writing, photos, and oh, yes: great recipe collection!Besh meets this criteria well. What this reviewer really enjoys is the fine prose which speaks of his heart and passion for New Orleans cooking which he has grown up with and matured and developed. His wanting to be sustaining restaurants is an extension and promotion as he has entered into ventures raising his own pigs, helping local suppliers provide what is needed by such gourmet chefs, e.g. great story on the Creole Tomato Supplier. The format is large and photos are wonderful, with small historical B&W vingettes scattered throughout. This makes for great kitchen usage, as it stays open from its size and well chosen luxurious paper stock. This is not your coffee table type cookbook intended, but get it in the kitchen and put it to work.I sometimes enter gourmet phases and stay there for awhile, e.g. my Crepes phase, or my Tapas phase of late, or an ingredient phase such as my fascination with Pears. This offering from the Big Easy has certainly propelled me on a New Orleans phase, which not even Emeril's fine offerings has. First B.E. venture was Crabmeat and Frog Etouffee (with Lou. frog legs flown in fresh), a Grilled Watermelon, Tomato and Goat Cheese Salad; Smoked Pork Shoulder with Purple Plum Glaze; then polished off with wonderful but Old-Fashioned Blackberry Double-Crusted Blackberry Pie. Guests were in high praise mode after this! His organization is by ingredient/season pairing, along with celebrations such as Mardi Gras or Thanksgiving or Reveillion. Over 200 recipes in this collection along with Sources recommendations and great sidebars throughout. This is fine, large effort which will reward the cook looking to get in soul of one of New Orleans finest dedicated to preserving and extending its fine cuisine to us. For Besh of almost Iron Chef status: he has given us Iron Chef quality cookbook to battle with in our own foodie competitions and home dining environs.A must have in all the many offerings that our hitting the streets.

Great coloring book! Beautiful pictures and very educational.

As described, thanks!

This is a good informative coloring nook as it describes the different statues of Ancient India. This book has a lot of detail to it and is challenging for me as I have Multiple Slerosis and Fibromyalgia and several other syndromes and disabled. Coloring is a great relaxation and spiritual tool. With these types of coloring books, a person LEARNS as well as having fun and relaxing. Coloring is not just for little kids, kids over 50 love it too!

This book has beautiful images in it. I look forward to using these pictures as an addition to our study of Ancient India. Thank you for this high quality product.

I bought this to coincide with our study of the Ancient World. Not for children!! I thought this might show pictures of life in ancient India. The majority of the pictures are very explicit. They deal mostly with Hindu gods and goddesses in various stages of undress. I realize the drawings do accurately portray Hindu religious art--just be aware of the nature of the book before you buy it for your first grader. All I can say is...Yuck!

I was very disappointed to receive this coloring book. I purchased it for my first grade son to supplement his ancient history curriculum and was shocked to find that most of the pictures were of nude or topless Indian Goddesses. Of course, this is very inappropriate for a first grade child. There should have been some preview or warning that it contained mature content. I will be returning the book.

This is just an FYI: This is a great coloring book with many Hindu Gods. I am not uptight, but I use the coloring books like this in my classroom as a bonus activity, not often. (It's sad but 7th graders still really like to color.) Some of the pictures show women with very prominent nipples, and some other pictures can be misconstrued. I picked carefully and used white-out for some.

Our fourth grader is studying the country of India for her International Day project. I thought it would be great to use the pictures from the coloring book to decorate her display area. The pictures are very detailed and would work great with colored pencils. The problem is that the majority of the pages contain pictues of the India gods and goddesses that are nude or barely clothed. We were surprised and disappointed as this would not be appropriate for a school project display and presentation. Although it is a part of India's history we weren't comfortable with it and therefore returned the book. I can't think of a setting where this coloring book could be used.

Review

“An excellent field guide. . . . a must-have book for both plant lovers and folks who are curious about the natural landscape of this region.” —Coastal Home   “A functional field guide that promises to be useful to both professionals and amateurs interested in New England flora.” —Choice “Wildflowers of New England, written by Ted Elliman, a botanist and plant ecologist for the New England Wild Flower Society, and published earlier this year, is a great tool that can enhance your enjoyment of the outdoors. . . . Elliman describes the plants in clear, concise language. Like his prose, the photographs offer clear close-ups that aid in identifying plants.” —Portland Press Herald “Chances are, any plant you come across in the region you’ll be able to find in Elliman’s 448-page guide.” —The Providence Journal “This book not only has beautiful and helpful images—the introduction is a veritable course in botany. . . . Wildflowers of New England is a substantial little book, in many ways, but the heavy, shiny cover, complete with ruler marking, is tough enough to take on hikes for frequent onsite referrals.” —The Recorder

I figured a book with photos and associated with the NEWS would be a gem, but sadly, it is not. The photos are small and often not all that distinctive. There's only one photo per plant, often not showing the leaves or, alternatively, not providing a closeup of the flower. I live in central New England, and the first 2 common flowers I've attempted to identify this spring were not in the book. I finally ID'd them by doing an online search. Once I found their Latin names, I looked them up in this book's index -- and they were not there. But they are in my trusty 1968 volume of Peterson's Field Guide to Wildflowers, which remains my best book for wildflower ID because the illustrations point out finer details to help one differentiate among similar looking plants. Sometimes the oldies are the real goodies.

Disappointing. Compared to some other wildflower guides for the Northeast, such as Peterson's or Newcomb's, I believe that this one would be quite difficult for many people. Guides that use line drawings are often much more helpful in pointing out the key features needed for field identification; this one relies entirely on photographs which are small and often somewhat blurry. The number of species covered is extensive; for example there are around 30 species of goldenrods shown, but there is little attempt to point out which ones are most common and likely to be found. The author attempts to put similar shaped flowers together on a page, which results in some bizarre groupings, with unrelated plants that are clearly unlike in size, habitat and time of flowering placed next to each other on a page. I mainly found this guide interesting because it has new family names and groups recently created by genetic analysis.

A comprehensive reference for wildflower enthusiasts who have a good grounding in plant species. Useful as a secondary reference once you are reasonably sure of the plant identification. Photos are average. Organization by color, flower type, leaf arrangement is helpful. Good key to wildflowers, with explanation. Binding is better than paperback, but mine is already compromised at the corners. Index requires you know the scientific name of a plant or its specific common name to find the right page ex. Yellow loosestrife or Lysimachia terretris. No general heading for loosestrifes.

Very helpful. Lovely full color images, and organized in a wonderfully logical fashion. The front and back of the book clarify different ways of identifying plants, and each individual entry makes note of specific details that help distinguish it from similar plants. There is usually one image per plant, but some have and extra image of a detail such as a close-up of the leaves of the plant, in order to better aid accurate identification. The entries also make note of where the plant likes to grow, and what time of year it blooms. Along with information such as plant height, leaf length, leaf arrangement, flower type and petal numbers, and other qualities such as those.I actually bought this book for my Intro to Plant Biology class, and it is so nice I am happy to keep it. Instantly it helped me find the name for a few plants I was searching forever for the name of on the internet. Through web searches I had great difficulty finding one plant's name, and never found the other one, but this book allowed for easy identification, so it made me wish i had it sooner. It made me wish I had this sooner, because now I can tell people the name of my two favorite plants. This book also helps teach you the language so that I can know how to describe a plant in an important way later, should I need to.Really love this book, totally recommend it to any flower enthusiast. It is also fun going around and identifying and teaching my little cousins the different types of flowers in our yards with the help of this book :)

Love the book, glossy photos and spelled out information. Unfortunately just after getting this we're moving to the PNW! Ack!

The pictures and descriptions are what I need as a newbie to identifying wildflowers. Very happy with my purchase.

I heard the author speak locally, and I was delighted to purchase this at less cost.

This is a spectacular book-well organized with good pictures and descriptions. I bought it "used" and condition was excellent!

I absolutely love these simple flash cards! On one side is the state on the other is the capitol. The sides that have the states are colored with the state itself show in white, with the location of the capitol marked by a dot, just like shown on a map. The sides that hold the capitol are white, with the state once again shown, but in color. The cards are not see through, so when you hold them up neither side is visible from the opposite. In other words, you can drill from the capitol side, without the state showing through and vice versa. Also included are 36 country cards that have their capitol cities listed, including the US. These are easily sorted, because the country side is black as opposed to the states which are bright colors. I love these. They are perfect for my 5 year old. (And older kids)

For about 5 minutes, I thought about making my own. I mean really, with Pinterest, all these "crafty" websites, what "good" mom wouldn't make her little Einstein some flashcards right? Um, me! Ain't nobody got time for that. I got through about 2 states before I realized that I could be doing 25 other things in my house that really needed done and by these on Amazon for way cheaper and that look like the actual State they were supposed to look like. Not only that, These come with countries of the world as well. The States are easy to sort out to memorize, as they are in colors like pinks and orange, where the countries are black and white. This particular set of flash cards only have the State on one side and the Capital on the other with a dot that shows where in the State the Capital is located, so if you want more info, you have to purchase other cards. This was enough for us. I am happy.

These are great! I like how the state is shown in relation to its location in the country as well. And the smaller included set of national capitals was a nice bonus. I am using these for a game with an older friend. She laughs that it helps keep her mind sharp, and we have laughed a lot about the state capitals we've forgotten. I got two sets--one for me and one for her. I can't wait to show her how wonderful they are. Her eyesight is weaker, so the larger print is effective. Great buy and great quality.

These are wonderful cards! Very sturdy, colorful and helpful. On one side you have the state and on the other side you have the capital - therefore, you can quiz yourself both ways. I love that on the state side, there is a picture of the entire U.S., with the state on the card shaded so you can familiarize yourself with where the state is within the country. As an added bonus, there are several countries and their capitals included in the pack! My only complaint (and this is very small) is that the cards are larger than I would like -- they aren't huge, but I wish they were more like playing card size for portability purposes.

These are well printed and suit a couple of purposes. If they match your needs, they're a good choice. We had a middle-schooler facing a test on all 50 states and their capitals, who also needed to identify the states by location on a map. No other data was being asked (like state nickname etc.) so we needed a plain interface like these cards have. You can see from the box cover that one side of each card shows where a state sits in the main continental US map (sorry, Alaska and Hawaii -- you have to sit in the margin again!) The other side shows the state capital and its location within the state. With a two-sided card there is only so much the designer can do, and I discovered that to quiz a student about what state is being shown by the map location, it is necessary to hide the state name (at the bottom of the card) with a finger or two while holding the card up. If you wanted to get carried away I suppose you could make a card holder that would hide the bottom inch or so, to do the same thing. Anyway, not counting the occasional slipped finger (or very long state name), this plan worked. You can of course do the quiz in reverse, showing the capital side and asking for the state name. Since the capital side of the card also shows the state shape, it is hard to quiz just on the capitals by name -- the state outline is sort of a hint, you might say.You can figure most of this out for yourself, I am just explaining what happened when we actually tried to use these to test the knowledge in multiple ways. The cards work primarily for matching capitals and state names. Recognizing shapes, or memorizing capitals without a visual prompt, requires slight adaptations as described here.Somebody else complained about the box being pre-opened. The box design is kind of weird and there are some flaps that are hot glued together, that come apart easily when you try to get the cards out. You end up with a sort of floppy thing that doesn't really hold the cards very well. That is probably what happened for that one customer, but I do not know why they concluded that the box had been opened or tampered with. It's just an odd packaging approach. The first time through the deck, this kid was doing so well, I felt I had just wasted $4! But the cards got pulled out later and re-used without any adult prompting, so I guess they were appealing to read and handle. Being able to shuffle the order is nice, compared to reading from a list on paper. if you have multiple users (big family or lots of friends) you will probably get more value from the set, and they are sturdy enough to last for a while -- if you can get them to stay in the box between uses.We did not use the country cards; they're well made but it seems odd to arbitrarily choose a couple dozen countries, out of the hundreds on earth, to include. It would seem to make more sense to have separate sets by continent, or something along those lines. Since this set is about the USA, I think it good that US territories are included, even though we did not need them.

Perfect, exactly what I was looking for and makes learning fun! I have my daughter pick 3 a day to memorize so she doesn't get overloaded with too much info. since she has other subjects to study as well.

My daughter had to learn all the state capitals for school. This was the perfect help. There are cards with all the states and their capitals and countries and their capitals. Good quality and very helpful. I liked that there were 6 different background colors for the state cards. This gave an easy way to separate them ("Today I'm going to work on the red ones.").

I got these for my daughter because I think it is sad our school district does not teach states and captials until 5th grade. She is in 2nd grade and is a good reader and these work great. They are also very sturdy compared to other sets I have seen.Besides the states, the set comes with country cards. The countries are actually a bit difficult, with African, Middle Eastern and South American countries, good challenge for adults as well as a good thing for your kids to be learning too!
