Seaforth has been on a roll the last few years, pumping out one high-quality naval reference book after another, each one packed with rare insights and excellent photography. This one was originally scheduled for a mid-2016 release but kept on getting pushed back until now. While it definitely has some high points, it's a rare disappointment from the publisher, and I'm left wondering exactly why it was delayed so long.First, the good stuff. It has a tremendous amount of depth and scope, going all the way back to the earliest steam gunboats to modern day riverine craft. It's very much a naval reference in the style of the Conway/NIP books of the late 70s and 80s. Very lean, efficient, no BS. With some polishing, this would have made an excellent companion to Conway's "All the World's Fighting Ships" quartet. Flipping through it quickly, I've come across entries on the Finnish Lake Ladoga gunboat 'Aallokas,' the German "Siebelfahres," the converted Paraguayan yacht 'Adolfo Riquelma,' and the Soviet armored river gunboats that fought at Stalingrad. Most of the craft receive a specifications table, a brief history, and one or two photographs or diagrams. Many of the most famous riverine battles and campaigns are described in detail, as are the careers of the more famous gunboats.Although I can see this book being an excellent jumping off point for further research, it's too flawed to be a truly classic reference. While the historical elements are excellent, there's almost nothing on the design, development, machinery, or weapons of any of the craft depicted. Some boats are so sketchily detailed I'm not sure why they were even included. Considering Seaforth's usually high standards, the visual presentation is a mend. The photographs tend to be extremely small and of poor quality with blown-out contrast and compression artifacts, and the diagrams are frequently tiny and useful only for getting a basic idea of a boat's general arrangement. Although I'm not the type who demands pretty color images of gray and white boats, the lack of color photographs outside the two appendixes is a disappointment. Quite a few of the photos and diagrams are credited to internet forums or have links to Pinterest pins that probably won't exist in two or three years from now. What good will they do a researcher in 20 years?As much as I'd love to give this a higher rating, it's too sloppy to truly recommend. Although it presents a truly fascinating collection of obscure craft, the lack of care in presentation and the lack of technical details make this one for hardcore gunboat fans only. How ironic that a book on river gunboats would be a mile wide, but only an inch deep!

This book covers all of the various gunboats in all the navies. It is an excellent reference work and one that I will refer to many times in the future when I am looking for information. I highly recommend this book.

Beautifully illustrated, a thorough, detailed, comprehensive history of river gunboats. A must for naval history libraries. An excellent addition to any collection of Jane's, Conway's, and Combat Fleets.

This book costs a bit and takes up a lot of space, and you probably already have some book on gunboats. You certainly have access to wikipedia, so before we plunk down our money it seems worthwhile to ask a few questions:Is the definition of gunboats broad enough to include all the riverine combatants in the American Civil War? Modern river gunboats? Does it have an index? A filmography? Are the pictures of camouflage schemes in Appendix 2 in color? Does it have a section on postage stamps from around the world that feature gunboats? Is this book an unwieldy size? Will this book lie flat while I study it? Are there pictures on every page?The answers are yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and almost every page.But it’s not all “yeses”. There are some “noes”, too.Are there any maps? Are all the pictures in color? Are there lots of descriptions of combat?Maybe it would be more helpful to just describe it.This is a 11” wide, 12” tall book of 336 pages. It’s organized by nation, from the tiny and ephemeral Acre to Russia and the CSA. There’s an introduction for each nation, since each country’s operation of gunboats is different and requires different organization, then all the gunboats are described, organized by region of operation (when necessary) and chronology. There are pictures or plans for most vessels, along with the data block with the vital statistics. Some combat descriptions are interspersed, but they are far from comprehensive. Similarly, specifics on the design and power train are frequently but not always present.There are a lot of pictures, more pictures than I would have guessed you could find. Definitely some I feel I should have seen but definitely have not. There are photos, original plans, period drawings and other art, and modern drawings. There are not only images of the vessels, but of the equipment and weapons. Many of the photos have interesting things in the background, too. There are also some photos of sunk, abandoned, and wrecked boats, kinda neat.The bibliography is extensive, but not annotated. It includes a bunch of websites. The index seems complete, including not just vessel names and individual people but also topics that are addressed in the various entries such as technologies, battles, and manufacturers.Do you need this book? You can get plenty of info from wikipedia for the important vessels, and if you’re interested in gunboats you probably have a few books, so what are the selling points here? Comprehensiveness is one, everything is here, even if only lightly touched on. Second, it is a beautiful book; if gunboats are in your wheelhouse you will be pleased to own this book. Thirdly, there are plenty of books about gunboats in Africa and China, but there has been a lot of shooting on the river systems of South America, Eastern Europe, and Russia. I haven’t seen many books on these, but they are covered here in full. The Russia section is early 10% of the book. Finally, this book includes everything there is to know about the Swiss navy. Seriously. Two pages, the same as Serbia or Burma/Myanmar.The one glaring fault, from the war gamer’s point of view at least, there is very little info on armor. Almost none. There is a “Guns/Armor” section in every data block, but while the guns are always described armor is rarely mentioned. Occasionally you see “armored bridge” or “bullet proof plating”, and you could infer from the description how the ship was constructed, but none of us are going to be satisfied with the armor info.Another, smalerl disappointment is the modeling section. That’s not necessarily expected, but in the introduction the author says he was “obliged to delete” an appendix on researching and building model gunboats. Not to worry, that info will be on his website. Except that it’s not. In fact, as of November 2018 this book is mentioned on his website only as a work in progress. But it just came out, I trust that in time the work he did on modeling will be available to us, and I look forward to it!Beyond all this the book has been prepared carefully. The “Notes on Plans and Specifications” section, explaining in the Introduction how the author handled certain problems with the sources, and other clues tell me that the author was careful, and took the time where it was worthwhile to tell us how he was careful.I am happy to have this and expect it to be enjoyable, useful, and inspires some modeling and gaming.

Think “Conway’s” but for River Gunboats. Only scanned a few entries so far, but looks excellent.

Chuck Swindoll did a great job of dissecting the Book of Job. I love this book because it helps us understand that no matter what your trials are you must know that God is still on the Throne. Job never disrespected the Sovereignty of God but was allowed to question why especially since he knew that his life represented God. This is a great book to read to enhance growth and maturity in ones walk with the Lord. The evil one came for Job on every side but Job did not give in. No matter what his circumstances was, he never denied the Greatness of God something the whole world need to understand so that life can be lived to the fullest in Christ Jesus!

It's been a little while since I read this book till now, when I'm writing the review. But, this is one of my very favorite of Swindoll's books. It really shows how God is in control of our lives in ways we don't fully appreciate. The book makes a contentious postulation that God was directly responsible for causing Job's ailments and calamities. The argument is well formed...even if many people don't go along with it.There's no fluff or platitudes in Swindoll's writing. And his love of Christ always shines through in his books.

Any Biblical based biographies by Charles Swindoll are incredible. I have read several and can hardy put them down. I wanted to read Job as I read through the Bible every year and as mant times as I have done it, I always want to know more about what the "friends" are talking about. It is an awesome read and I highly recommend it as well as the ones about Paul, Joseph etc.

I've been trying to learn more about the characters of the old testament and I love the Charles presents it. It discusses the book of Job and all the circumstances in his life, but then he does a cool thing - he applies it modern time and YOUR life. I love that. I have become a big fan of Charles and bought many of his books this year. This book of Job was my 2nd of his I read - I read Elijah first which was awesome too. I'm on Ester right now and love that book too.

Analysis shallow and repetitive. If you want to hear in endless detail how insensitive Job's counselors were, this is the book for you. From this you would think the main purpose of the Holy Spirit in inspiring this book was to teach how not to do grief counseling. Anecdotes innocuous to offensive. Chuck is a much better preacher than a writer, and this book looks like a slapdash job put together from sermon notes. Not my cup of tea.

This is thick book. Chuck Swindoll does his best to keep interesting. A lot of scripture to cover. Never knew that from chapter 3 up to part of last chapter was written as poetry. This explains so much. His commentary adds so much to his great lives series. The whole series is just absolutely great!

Some interesting thoughts. If you are just looking or something to read that touches on the Book of Job this is ok. If you are looking for something even somewhat scholarly this is not it.

The author takes on a difficult study and, not only handles it well, he makes it easy and exciting to read. This whole series will definitely draw you closer to God.

When Akye the turtle knocks on his door, Ananse feels obliged to invite him to share his meal, but the spider tricks his friend into leaving the table several times, during which Ananse eats all the food. Ronald B. Adler is Professor of Communication Emeritus at Santa Barbara City College. He is coauthor of Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication, Eleventh Edition (OUP, 2009), Looking Out, Looking In (2011), and Communicating at Work: Principles and Practices for Business and the Professions (2011).George Rodman is a professor in the Department of Television and Radio at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, where he founded the graduate media studies program. The textbook was a great aid during class. If you take the time to read the whole chapters and the examples provided, you will get a better grasp at the concepts and would not need to review the instructor's notes so much —at least, that was my case. I felt that the textbook provided enough information, and I used it in every single paper I wrote for my class, and it helped me a bit with other classes I was taking at the time.The organization of the textbook is really neat, which helps a lot when you are looking for a specific concept.This edition has almost the same as the newest one, only that the order is slightly different, and some exercises are missing. This edition worked just fine for me when I needed this book.

Moderately well-written and only beginning to be relevant, this textbook does well enough. I am using it in my Communications 101 course in college. It's somewhat dry and wordy sometimes, as text books are wont to be, and some of the theories expressed in it can come off as a little rigid, one-sided and some as downright quackery. Parts of it are quite interesting though - definitely recommended if you're wanting to go into something like social sciences or psychology at some point, but as somebody who is looking for practicality in a professional business environment, there isn't much here to interest or pertain to you. At least it's nice and cheap.

Required course text. I will admit that I am not a huge fan of the class I had to take. The material however was well presented, if you are interested in the 'science' of communication that is. Overall there were many crossover terms and a lot of vague definitions of terms or varying definitions / meanings for the same term which I greatly disliked.

I enjoyed the layout of this book. The chapters were easy to read even though most chapters were rather lengthy (20+ pages). I am keeping this book in my collection rather than reselling it. I think that the information inside will prove to continue to be of value for many years to come. I would recommend this textbook.

I don't understand why books like this are still printed. This must be insanely high profit for the writer/publisher. I feel like everything in this book is basically common sense that teachers feel the need to have printed in a pricey book.

It's an okay book. This book does provide some of the essential concepts in understanding how communication works, but lacks any real depth.

The tone of this book is either very condescending or is actually written for 12 year olds. Some of the sentences are constructed in such an obtuse way it is almost painful to read. If I didn't *have* to read this book for class, I definitely would never read it. The way that key terms are in italics instead of in bold/contrasting color/underlined makes it difficult to know what exactly one is supposed to glean from the work. Also, textbooks are extremely expensive and this one contains comic strips which I am sure are not free to use, making it that much frustrating to read. I really don't think that a "Cathy" comic strip is going to teach me anything about communication that isn't possible to just explain in plain text. It's not cute.

if there was a condensed version I still don't think i would read it. I passed my course by taking notes in class this book is long winded and by the time it gets to the point I lost the plot.

This cookbook is AMAZING!!! There are photos of the "grandmothers" with the raw ingredients and photos of the finished product. It's so nice to have a little bit of info about each of the women whose recipes are featured in the book; it gives you a sense of connection.The recipes were easy to follow and alternatives were offered for ingredients that may not be readily available to everyone. I read through the entire book as soon as I received it and am really looking forward to making some new and delicious recipes!!!The only thing I would suggest is to include recipes from different countries in any subsequent books.

I purchased this book as a gift for my mom. Its a very sweet, unique book. I looked through the whole book before I gave it to her. It was so neat to see how people eat all around the world. The ingredients they use. Also, very neat to look at all the pictures in the book of all the different kitchens women cook in around the world.

I love this book that shows the grandmas in their homes with the ingredients (one with an iguana and another one with caterpillars!) , along with the backstory and finished dishes. These women show pride in their food and family and that is the theme throughout this wonderful book.

This is a wonderful nook about what grandmas all over the world cook. I got it for my mom for Christmas and she loved it. Great pictures of each of the grandmas and their signature dishes!

I enjoyed the celebration of grandmothers from varied countries and cultures. There were very few recipes I would cook. Most were a beef/starch combo. A few contained ingredients such as shark or catapillars.

Our family has lived all over the world and many of these foods are "going home" for us. Beautiful illustrations and done with such love!! You can see the joy that making a traditional meal to feed loved ones brings to each of these women. No matter where in the world or what the meal is, the Love is universal.

Our family loves this book. my wife cooks meals from here and before we eat we read the story about the food we are eating. Great way for kids to diversify their palates and learn about other cultures.

This is a beautiful book for your kitchen or coffee table. It has great stories from loving grandmothers across the world that show their love through cooking. I have not made any of the recipes in this book, but I love to sit and look at the beautiful women and their stories.
