A great resource book for my business. I give it 5 stars for content...but it IS disappointing the number of typo and grammatical errors I have discovered. Published works used to be proof-read by professionals and you rarely found a mistake...you would think that with all the technology for grammar/spell check, etc., it would be even more fail-proof, but guess not.

Having lived through most of this I recall the sweep of these events, but the details had grown a bit fuzzy.To me the overarching theme of Western intervention has been counterproductive at nearly every turn. From the Crusades, which had no benefit to the West but did manage to bring Muslims together to oppose and defeat the Christian armies but did manage to ravage Constantinople -- the last Eastern Christian bulwark -- and eliminate its effectiveness as a buffer state protecting Europe, to the utterly insane break up of the Ottoman Empire following World War II that included the enshrinement of the Saudis, the United States' worst ally in the history of allies, to overthrowing Iran's elected government and installing a dictator in 1953.Bacevich's book starts later in the time line, around the time of the Iranian hostage crisis and U.S. support and arming of the USSR's enemies in Afghanistan. The pattern of eff-ups continues, whether they're launched with the best of intentions or in a naked grab at controlling oil or to fend off a perceived Soviet threat.Most of these events are familiar to me. Where Bacevich is instructive, at least to me, is the military history he is able to bring to bear on the subject.Unfortunately, even as I read this I can formulate what the next few chapters of this book would look like if updated 10 or 20 years from now as the current clueless moron in the White House flounders in foreign policy. Without learning about -- and for the most part being utterly ignorant of history -- the United States is doomed to fail in this region over and over.May you live in interesting times, indeed.

An expose of the self seeking and self promoting actions of our generals and politicians and the fatuous neoconservative militarism which presently guides the foreign policy of our country. The folly of reliance on military power to cure political and cultural defiencies, defined as an absence of neoliberal Christian democracy, and the failure to attain that objective is documented in this engrossing study of self deception and evangelization.When you finish reading this book you will understand the reasons why we cannot effectively engage middle eastern problems but also why we can't bring ourselves to disengage.When american soldiers are sent overseas and become casualties their blood becomes a symbol to shed more blood. We have seen this in every war fought since 1945. The men we elect to the presidency with the exception of Eisenhower have had no clue how to conduct foreign policy when the lives of our men and women are at risk. We seem to be caught up in some macho vendetta with the entire world. The continuation of this vendetta has proven to be very profitable for a few wealthy people far from the firing line. It has proven to be amenable to vote getting. It has proven to be amenable to the self promotion of those officers above field level command into whose hands our servicemen have been encared.It is clear that this country is in more danger today than 35 years ago when we decided to engage directly in the middle eastern quagmire. Yes, it was a quagmire before we got involved and transformed an oil protection mission into preventive war interventionism with the purpose of imposing neoliberal democracy upon Stone Age societies. Our strategy is a muddle, a chimera.All Americans have to ask ourselves some very hard questions about just what we are doing in the Middle East and how do we expect it to end.This mission cannot go on forever and Americans cannot expect to remain insulated from the blowback from the wars we are conducting.

Andrew Bacevich was a history professor at Boston University and a former army colonel. The book starts in 1980 and summarizes American foreign policy and the various military campaigns in the Middle East since then. Bacevich is controversial and brutally honest, which makes the book a fun read. He makes a good case for abandoning the Middle East. Over the years, Bacevich claims that our policy-makers and military leaders in the region have often proved clueless and incompetent. He particularly dislikes Donald Rumsfeld and Tommy Franks.Bacevich believes that U.S. policy in the Middle East has become incoherent and questions whether we still need to be there. He argues that U.S. policy is now on auto-pilot and blames the military industrial complex. He claims that there is a bi-partisan consensus in favor of perpetual war. Nothing will change unless the public becomes wise to what is going on. He argues that one of the drawbacks of having a professional military is that the public is no longer invested in the wars. As a result, there is no anti-war movement. Most people want to be seen to be patriotic.Prior to 1980, the strategy was simple; keep the oil flowing. However, Bacevich suggests that Gulf oil is no longer essential to maintaining the American way of life. A weakness of the book is that Bacevich rarely backs up his arguments with data, so he can sound like an opinionated uncle giving you a lecture. My limited research indicates that on this issue he is right. In 2015 the Persian Gulf only provided about 16% of America’s oil, while Canada provided 40% (according to the EIA’s website). The U.S. has become an oil exporter again and no longer needs oil from the Gulf. In 2015, the U.S. was importing 1.51 million barrels per day from the Persian Gulf, but it was also exporting 4.74 million barrels per day to the world. Bacevich suggests it is time to revisit our Middle East strategy. He argues that the Middle East is an unnecessary distraction and America is taking its eye off the ball in other parts of the world.After the Arab-Israeli War in 1973, the Saudis decided to punish the U.S. for its support of Israel with an oil embargo. This caused economic chaos in the West and long lines at gas stations. Bacevich does not mention the embargo or that Henry Kissinger told the Saudis the U.S. would take over their oil fields unless the embargo ended. The embargo ended. The U.S. has since developed a good understanding with the Saudis probably because was mostly about oil. Washington has used a mixture of carrot and stick but left the Saudis to manage their own internal affairs. Washington also provides protection in various ways. It has discouraged the press from investigating the country’s links to terrorists or its human rights abuses. The Shah was viewed as a reliable ally and U.S. policy makers remember the chaos that occurred when he was ousted in 1979. All presidents since then have wanted to preserve the House of Saud and have cut it a lot of slack.After the Shah was overthrown and the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, The fear was that Tehran or Moscow might invade the Gulf and seize the oil. When Saddam Hussein invaded Iran in 1980, he became a U.S. ally. The U.S. did not want Iran to become the dominant power in the region so it provided guns to Iraq. Rather confusingly, the Reagan administration also provided weapons to Iran. Two years later, America’s ally, Iraq, invaded Kuwait. Saddam became a villain. America’s mission in the region broadened. Reagan attempted to sort out the mess in Beirut and put pressure on Libya. These efforts proved costly in terms of American lives. Reagan, despite his reputation for being a tough guy, backed down and did not retaliate. Bill Clinton supported the UN's peacekeeping efforts in Somalia, but after the Black Hawk Down tragedy, the U.S. walked away from the country.Desert Storm in 1991 was a major success and led to a considerable amount of hubris. By 2002 it was received wisdom in Washington that the U.S. had the most powerful military in history and it wanted to use that power to “shape the world order.” After 9/11 the Bush Administration adopted, what can only be called, an imperial agenda. It wanted to invade countries who did not play ball. Iraq was to be a test case. Bacevich claims that Wesley Clark, a former 4-star general, was told by the Pentagon that the Bush administration wanted to invade 7 countries in 5 years, including Iran. Bacevich claims that Bush wanted to Americanize the region.The Bush team and its supporters saw the U.S. as a global hegemon. Resistance was futile. Bush believed that America was an exceptional country and its destiny was to impose its will and democracy on the rest of the world. The backward peoples of the Middle East had to “change the way they live” and get with the program and forget Islam. If they resisted, the American military would sort them out. This sounded eerily similar to Hitler’s concept of a master race, who because of their innate superiority, could do whatever they wanted.The brutal tactics of Ricardo Sanchez, the top U.S. commander in Iraq after the 2003 invasion, also shared similarities with the Nazis. Bacevich prints an excerpt from a report written in 2004 by the International Red Cross which are shocking. American troops would smash down doors in the middle of the night and beat up ordinary people in front of their families. They would smash their houses and whisk them away to torture factories like Abu Ghraib. This behavior helped destroy America’s moral standing in the region. It was also stupid because it just created a new generation of insurgents who hated America. Iraqis became increasingly hostile to the foreign occupation. Its people did not seem to want what America offered.Bush’s strategy was a dead-end and was abandoned because it became too expensive in terms of blood and treasure. Occupying countries and forcing the people to abandon their culture was a tall order in the Islamic world. According to Brown University, both wars cost the U.S. over $4 trillion. After the financial crash, the U.S. could no longer afford to carry on invading countries it disapproved of. It has created a number of failed states. The armies it trained at massive expense proved useless. The U.S. is still trying to put Iraq back together and is retraining a new army. The strategy now seems to be to assassinate troublemakers using drones and special forces. Eliminating potential threats before they emerge.Bacevich seems excited about the prospect of the US moving into Africa. Bacevich views European colonialism, especially British colonialism, as a root cause of the world's problems. At this point he seemed to contradict himself and appears to have learned nothing from Vietnam and the Middle East wars. Fighting in Africa could be disastrous. The former British colony of Nigeria is 41% Muslim and 58% Christian. The country has been independent since 1960. There is tension between the two religious communities. The Nigerian terror group, Boko Haram is inspired by ISIS. Nigeria's population is 180 million and is expected, by the UN, to grow to 730 million by 2100. Why would the US want to send troops to Nigeria and get involved in an African civil war? How many refugees would it generate and where would they go? What would America's end game be? Nigeria was relatively peaceful during British rule. They built schools, introduced Christianity, and ended slavery.Bacevich loves the U.S. military and blames its leadership for its shortcomings in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, and Lebanon. He also claims that the U.S. is trying to be the world’s policeman on the cheap. That is debatable, it could be that it is not very good at fighting insurgencies. The US has been spending more than the next 10 countries combined on defense. Not that long ago the British controlled Somalia, Sudan, Palestine, Egypt, Iraq, Pakistan, and Yemen with a fraction of the troops that America has to deploy. It now seems that China and Russia are stepping up their game and Bacevich may be right perhaps that the U.S. should now focus its attention on meeting that potential threat and forget about the Middle East.

Kevin Callan's excellent writing style, use of self-deprecating humor, sharing his extensive wilderness experience' and detailed descriptions about paddling/hiking routes make this book both entertaining, thought provoking and educational. He is well known already as 'The Happy Camper' (search YouTube), Whiskey Fireside Chats and through his other public appearances. This is a wonderful book of stories validating everything we hear about exploring the natural world. And, he actually isn't an "idiot" as he claims to be - but the idea of it works well throughout this book.

I discovered Kevin via his Happy Camper video series on YouTube. I like that he has this oddball sense of humor but still conveys a lot of great information and advice about camping and canoeing. His love for the outdoors (and Canada) is obvious, and he approaches even things like long portages and swarms of mosquitoes with an almost childlike glee that's infectious.

Kevin is hilarious and both a great author and story teller. If I could pick any canoeing partner for a day it would be the Happy Camper

Kevin Callan ' s new book "Dazed but not Confused: Tales of a wilderness wanderer",is a great read, his best adventures, and some misadventures, there all there. I enjoyed reading about his insight to Guiding.This book will appeal to a broad audience.

I heard about this book on the radio and was intrigued. No, I'm not really outdoorsy, and I don't go canoeing, but the idea of someone promoting the wilderness made sense to me. The stories are short enough to read while you're eating breakfast. And pretty entertaining. Just not riveting. Maybe to an outdoor enthusiast they would hold more allure.

I was on my feet, but couldn't remember where." I was hooked. Never a flight seemed so short. The book, although I have not finished it because I am savoring not only the content but also the beautifully way it is written, has big promises, not only from the literature perspective, but for the proposal as well. I am spending this Saturday, Shabbat ritual as suggested, finishing it and looking so forward to doing so. Thank you Tal, for the insights it is giving us. It is truly a book to ponder about.

The audio version is narrated by Tal, and he does an excellent job.This book is a mix of an autobiography and a philosophical look at the meaning and outlook for secular Judaism.It really is excellent. His quest for his Jewish identity as a secularist and outlook for the future of Jewish people, peppered with his humble account of his rise and experience as an American born pilot in the Israeli Air force, makes this book a very thought provoking yet entertaining read. God is in the crowd is so well written, it keeps the reader engaged and wanting for more. He is unafraid to hold back on discussing topics that are often taboo, especially the juxtaposition of the religious and secular divide within Israeli culture and the impact that has had, and will have, on the future of the Jewish people.I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in and search for meaning and identity as a secular Jew. An excellent debut into the academic and literary world, and I look forward to his next book.

Every year I buy a calendar with a sailing theme and send it to my German cousin, who is an avid sailor. He contacted me as soon as he got the calendar I sent this year (which arrived in a very timely fashion) and was quite exuberant about the excellent quality of the photographs. He has now chosen a couple of spots he wants to sail to this coming year, based on the calendar. The company he works for takes sailing pictures for whatever reason and he said that they don't hold a candle to the pictures on this particular calendar. Dr. Reilly’s book is a must read on the epidemic of hate crime hoaxes, especially given the recent high profile case of Jussie Smollet. The mainstream media and social media sites are quick to report on alleged hate crimes with little or no evidence or investigation. They also fail miserably to ask difficult questions and follow up when presented with contradictory evidence. Additionally, many media sites have recently removed articles that they have published about fake hate crimes.

This is an important book because of the issue it addresses -- the poisoning of American life by hate crime hoaxes. Most hate crimes actually take place, but a disturbingly significant number are actual hoaxes, and many of our highest profile allegations turn our to be just that: hoaxes. Viewed thus, the recent Jussie Smollett case -- should the police case against him be proven to be true -- is not a rare event. The author discusses a wide range of cases, which are often unsubstantiated claims made about threats, assaults, and worse agains members of religious, sexual, and racial minorities. He also includes claims made by whites against these same groups that turn out to be unwarranted. He makes enough of an empirical case to support his claim that about 15% of hate claims are hoaxes, and it might rise to as much as 50% of college campuses. This is a credible claim, but it must be noted that it is far from conclusive, as it is hard to determine just how large the total universe of hate crimes may be, as some portion go unreported and there is sufficient doubt that another portion that have been recognized as hate crimes are actually misinterpreted or highly exaggerated. Nevertheless, I only gave this book 4 stars because it is badly written and organized, with a lot of repetition. In addition, the author has an unfortunate tendency to constantly make snide asides to the audience that detract from the narrative. I have no idea why the editor didn't do a better job with the book and eliminate these distractions. Regnery is a well known conservative publishing house and I have noticed that conservative writers -- even ones like the usually thoughtful Guy Benson -- have a proclivity for marking snarky not so clever witticisms. Leftists usually don't write this way, although they tend to annoy us with breathless high dudgeon and outrage. It is unclear what Wilfrid Reilly's affiliations may be -- and it really doesn't matter -- but his commitment to transparency and honesty is clear throughout. Also, his primary motivation for writing the book -- to make the case that our tolerance of these hoaxes is eroding confidence in majority-minority relations that are the best they have been in American history (although more needs to be done to help Americans treat each other better) -- is laudable. His final chapter on what should be done:"1) understand that many hate crimes are hoaxes, 2) actively and aggressively punish individuals discovered to have faked bias crimes, 3) stop making excuses for these criminals, and 4) stop the flow of benefits with which we currently reward these crimes."is right on the money.Reilly's great achievement is to have put the issue on the table, and it is something that social scientists need to turn their attention to.

Dr Reilly wrote an intelligent study with well documented hoax hate crimes with expert views from a diverse person and conservative academic voice rarely heard. His sources are all accurate with arguments that promote positive thought on a relevant issue today. It really made me question the climate of college campuses today that would breed so many hoax hate crimes and the mental illness of a person who would make it up. Some of it was over my head but the audience was likely meant to be other PhDs. I am not ready to abolish hate crime laws but think we need to focus on hate group members with them. We also need to remember hate crimes still happen and fake ones are a small percentage. I going to read some Thomas Sowell based on this book and pray for peace among all groups.

A definite improvement over the first book. Still Marion is a weak lead. But improving so maybe by the end I'll actually like her.From the things I gathered Marion was a holy terror of spoiled teen before she lost her memories and while that doesn't surprise me thanks to the hints from the previous book, it makes me wonder how her sister Elise had let things get so bad. After all Elise is God and since Marion is her Voice they should have had some sort of relationship, right? And Elise is not one to indulge or spoil. How did this happen? I mean her own mother didn't want to talk to Marion, who's been missing for weeks and her foster sister hates her guts! If I was in Marion's shoes all these things would make me seriously consider not going after my lost memories, since apparently they made me a total bitch. But Marion is both selfish and more than a bit stupid she does precisely that. Despite her obligations and the lives depending on her, she follows her memories to an obvious trap that almost costs her her life. Yet there were some flashes of a more decent Marion, one who has the potential to be likeable and to come to life if Marion chooses to follow another path.Seth and Charity were the real stars of this book and I like them more and more. One of my theories that I thought of reading the previous book proved to be correct and now I'm trying to fit it in with the info from the last book of the Ascension series. The continuity isn't really good but maybe all will be explained in a latter book. One of the things that bother me most is that the Elise Marion remembers in some flashes and the one I do are two very different women.The last thing I want to talk about in this review are Konig and Nori. I always knew that Konig is bad news but I wasn't aware how bad it is. The guy has classic abuser tendencies and needs to be killed as soon as possible. Preferably by making some colossal mistake thanks to his overinflated ego. In fact he almost dies because of his stupidity but Seth helped him *sigh*. Nori was one hell of a disappointment. She seemed to be one of the good guys but apparently a set of chiseled abs and ass are enough to make her lose her mind, debase herself and become a greedy, manipulative little bitch. Damn, I wanted her to be on our side.The plot thickens in this book and managed to get me hooked despite me still not giving a damn for Marion. At least there's a promise that Elise will actually show up and I need to see Konig get his ass handed to him one way or another :) And hey what do you know, the next book might continue the trend of improvement. Maybe by the end of the series one of the books will earn a 5 star rating!

3.75 Marion you Might be Redeemable Yet StarsHow do you make some of your characters more interesting and the plot better in your second book??? Easy you tell everyone to go to hell. I loved the switch up to the focus of this story and was happy to tag along to hell with Seth and Marion.This is a really good example of why I don’t usually count a series down and out if I just so happen to dislike the first book in it. I really hated Marion in Cast in Angelfire and it really colored how I felt about that entire book. For the most part she was a selfish, partially clueless, brat and I couldn’t get past a lot of that. There are definitely reasons for it all and they make a little more sense when you read this second book.I gave this second book of this series a go simply because I liked Seth, he was the only shining star for me in the first book. The focus of Cast in Demonfire is a little about finding Marion’s memories but the majority of it is about Seth figuring out what is happening to him and why. He doesn’t want to tell Marion exactly what is going on because he isn’t sure that he can trust her and I totally didn’t blame him there.***Sure, Marion liked Seth right now. She might even forgive him for the monster he was becoming. But then the Canope would restore her memories, and she wouldn’t be his Marion anymore. Charity hadn’t spoken to people like Dana McIntyre, who characterized Marion as relentlessly selfish***Every sentence I read in this book made me certain that the last thing I wanted was for Marion to get her memories back. It seems that everyone who knew her from before seems to hate her for something. But Seth I really wanted to get to what is going on with him and get some more insight into his history. But then the book made me really scared to get those answers because what if I don’t like them.***“You know what happened to me in Genesis. You have answers.”“You wouldn’t be satisfied to know them. You’ll live in despair when you know the truth, lost in darkness deeper than any other within the Nether Worlds.” Her bony fingers slid down his shoulders, her left horn brushing his hair as she bent closer to whisper in his ear. “You don’t need to know the truth. You don’t need the Canope. Leave and be satisfied knowing ignorance is best.”***Not only do we spend some time in hell there is also the time spent at the winter court that is still in a state of upheaval. I’m not a fan of Konig at all and I really think he is just one step away from being a woman beater. But this book really made me despise him on multiple levels and left me thinking that he is going to be a mess of trouble for Marion in so many ways.Charity is actually the character that I thought got fleshed out the best. She is growing to accept who and what she is and it seems like she might not want to hide what that is anymore. It will be interesting to see where she finds her place to be in the world.Marion has come a little ways as well. She isn’t exceptionally likeable yet but she grew a bit in this book and definitely isn’t quite as bad anymore. She maybe just had too much power when she was too young and it colored everything for her. This should be a good learning curve for her and maybe she will be a better person this time around with or without all of those lost memories.I left this book feeling really excited for the next so here is to hoping that it keeps getting stronger.

It is an interesting turn of events really and things are heating up with the love triangle of Marion, Seth and the Sidhe prince who let me tell you is very needy of late. His about face when he sees an opportunity makes me want to warn Marion that he is self serving but I think she already knows that and beware anyone who gets caught in the cross fire. So many twists and turns and the "big reveal" at the end was interesting concerning who put this game in motion - all to find Marion's memories. I liked Charity as a character and wished she had more options in the end (No spoilers here) but maybe in the next book things will change.Seth's character has changed and he is still rescuing people sometimes from themselves and this will be a great series watching how he deals with his own revelations and will revenge be on the menu any time soon. There is never a dull minute in this action packed series and it is definitely worth buying this book, you won't be disappointed.I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review but I also pre-purchased it before I was given a copy.
