If you want a reference text, do not buy this. I am sorry I did. To me, it is worse than useless, because it contains only half the information contained in the previous (5th) edition. As a result, if I have a patient care quandary and need detailed information, I need to rely on the previous edition (or better, other texts). Then, I need to try to find what little has been added and updated in this edition. By abridging a good reference text, this continues a terrible tradition of recent American Psychiatric Association publishing, whereby the most recent editions of its Textbook of Psychopharmacology (Schatzberg) and Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (Dulcan) have all been severely abridged. What were decent reference texts are now survey or review texts - without being identified as such. These texts may be useful for medical students or prospective examinees wanting to read through for a review, but they are NOT suitable for practicing psychiatrists. One hopes that the American Psychiatric Association is not intentionally trying to dumb down the practice of psychiatry, but that seems to be an inevitable consequence of what is not just an APA mistake but their ongoing policy and practice. I would throw all of those texts away - except that I hate to destroy books - and paid good money for them.

Don’t waste your money. Since the publication of DSM-5, the APA has published updated versions of several textbooks. I have purchased 3. The textbook of psychiatry, textbook of psychopharmacology and the textbook of neuropsychiatry and clinical neuroscience. I have previous editions of all 3. All 3 of the newer editions have been cut down in size and scope, between 39 to 60%. They are more appropriately described as primers, books for beginners. Very shallow. Another way to put is to say they have been “dumbed down”. They are no longer sources of useful information for practicing psychiatrists. The textbook of psychopharmacology was especially disappointing; it doesn’t provide enough details that it can used to guide prescribing.

Not as detailed as Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis. I have a copy of both books. Some topics are not covered in details in this book but nevertheless, a useful book. For example, Delusional disorder, is barely covered and there is pretty much nothing and no treatment suggestion of the condition. I had to go to Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis to find better coverage on the topic. For the price, you would think that they would do a better job. The text is well written and well organized, however. DSM-5 all the way. But not worth the heavy price tag. The book can be read cover to cover without much difficulty. Not as intimidating as Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis in that regard. I strongly suggest buying the question book, as well. The learning is much more fun that way, with both books together. hope this review helps. Good luck.

However, it buys into the mainstream narrative of psychiatry, which is very positive toward the field, which is challenge by a lot of new research, as well as books such as "American Psychosis". This book is a great start, but you should probably couple it with a few other readings if you really want a comprehensive understanding of what's happened.

I found the coverage of factors that have impacted mental health care in the US very comprehensive and authoritative. The authors are clearly thoughtful about the complexities, including the philosophical and sociological perspectives at play, and extremely knowledgeable about the pragmatic details of policy development and implementation. An excellent work!

Through access from my university and eJournals, this book is downloadable and freely accessible online.However, if you don't have journal access online, it's still an interesting book to have for reference.

Details the rise and fall of various therapies and gapsin the system.Purchase this book with the recognition that its value is in its historical / policy approach of the subject. Some of thecommentary on pharmacology is dated - example, tricyclics being noted as first line therapy for depression.

Many, many years ago when I was a teenager the CBC used to broadcast a shortwave radio program called Hawaii Calls. The program was mainly a music show with singers and musicians from the Big Island. The predominant instrument was the ukulele in the four ranges and listening to that music was enchanting. Sunday nights were a real treat to look forward to. I don't think that either Arthur Godfrey or even Tiny (Tiptoe Through The Tulips) Tim ever made their own ukuleles, they could afford even the most expensive models. However, for the regular folk like me, Australian Bill Plant shows us how to make our own. Plant describes in detail the building of two types of the instrument, the traditional shaped and the simpler box type. There are four different types of ukuleles from soprano (Tiny Tim's) to the baritone and the author discusses these as well as suggesting the types of wood species that is best used for the instruments. Hawaiian koa is the traditional species. Solid wood is best rather than plywood. Plant shows us how to build the "Boxer", the simple style in chapter three and in the fourth chapter he details the construction of the professional grade. In each case he lists the tools and materials required. Plant also shows how to save money by using a shop made bending iron. Making your own ukulele looks like a lot of fun! Now, if only he could teach me to play it. I haven't built my ukulele yet but when I do I know that Bill Plant and Tricia Scott will show me how to play it in this excellent book and CD. The book has eight chapters but the tutors think you will be able to strum it in six or so. The book is designed for beginners like myself and judging by the text and photos it looks like maybe I'll easily get the hang of it in a short time. And, you can as well. Now, if only I could sing. I don't think the authors can help me there.

Probably really great if you have any stringed instrument background (like guitar, etc.) Easy to help you learn chords.......Works on strumming.....maybe I am just uncoordinated. For me it went maybe too fast.........like assuming I knew more than nothing about the ukulele.:)

10 year old grandson got a ukulele for his November birthday...He plays by ear and he loves this informative book...

Not really much to this, I would not have purchased it had I seen it first in a store. It sounded great, but wasn't what I was looking for.

started learning with ease.At least I knew some chords after guitar.In any case. anybody can learn it easily.

This was sent to my son for his birthday and I was told that it is a very good book and very helpful.

The purpose of this book is to provide a general description, with encoded examples, of numerous ways of representing music in the computer. This book is a collection of chapters by different authors each describing a musical code, usually the format of an input or data file for a music program. There is usually not enough information given to make a comprehensive description, but enough information is presented so that the reader has a good idea of what each code is like and can probably implement an interpreter of a reasonable functionality. Readers looking for a description of a particular code would be advised to check first, as there are some notable omissions. This is not an inadequacy on the part of the publishers, as obtaining permission can be difficult. It is also possible that there are important omissions due more to the editors not knowing of the existence of particular codes. A more serious flaw is the fact that the chapters were contributed over a number of years and some of the earlier ones, including contact details, were not updated prior to printing.The book distinguishes between three types of musical codes, depending on whether its primary function is to play sound, to produce printed notation, or to aid in analysis and research. It also describes some proposed interchange formats. The descriptions are authoritative wherever possible, being obtained from the authors of the programs in question or other experts. There are some annoying 'typos' such as swapped or missing examples and incorrect appendix definitions, but they should be obvious enough not to mislead many readers. The inclusion of English Braille and the proposed New International Standard, although unexpected, is to be commended.The book concludes with a section entitled "Reflections", which seems to equate "difficult" with "impossible" in an alarming way. Despite the title of the section, I don't think that it is clear enough that the reader has now left the factual world of file formats where "this byte does that" and is entering that of opinion, mostly about interchange possibilities. There are also some guidelines for those who find it necessary to write a new music code.This book is essential reading for anyone writing their own music program or devising their own "musical code". The book has a website that includes errata, updates and complementary material for different chapters, and a list of links to other sites dealing with musical codes. Since Amazon usually throws out reviews with web addresses in them, suffice it to say that you need to type "CCARH Publications Books" into Google, and the first address you see will show a list of websites for books, and this book should be the first in the short list shown.

Needed some codes for Midi meta-events and bought the book to get the codes.But instead of the important new midi codes there are just "xx".Completely useless. This is not a book about midi, but a collection of low quality articlesMogens
